I have SMAC for the PC but never got around to getting SMAX.

I notice that my PC SMAC CD is somewhat compatible in that if I use it
instead of my Mac SMAC CD, the CD check still works and the game plays
just fine.

As SMAX is getting hard to find for Mac nowadays can anyone either (A)
sell me a copy or let me know if the PC CD can be made to work on Mac if
that's all I can get. Or let me know where I can buy SMAX for Mac in the UK.

The improvements in SMAX look good :-)

I can't help with that, but presumably you've got the Carbon build of SMAC
from the port's author? It mostly works (there are a few graphic glitches),
and is a /lot/ faster than the Classic version.

Indeedy, and very fine it is too. I can't say I've noticed any glitches
but the readme says they're there.

I've encountered the crash on saving problem once or twice, so I
always run the game with the option set to autosave.

Regarding getting a Mac version: The binaries for the carbon version
are out there, so maybe just buying a PeeCee CD to get the datafiles
would be good enough to satisfy the licensing requirements? You can
find them on eBay for not too many Euros (not much compared to the
price new, but a high price for a used game. It seems that popular).

I'm pretty sure I can get the PC SMAX in the UK either second hand or
from a bargain bin. I would like to be sure the carbon binaries work
with the PC datafiles though.

Perhaps I'll try copying the PC SMAC disk that I have to the Mac HD and
pointing the SMAC carbon binary at it. That might give me some
confidence that I wouldn't be wasting my money getting the PC SMAX.

I'd still like the Mac one though. I'll never understand why they
discontinue what are (IMO) top titles like this at least on Mac. It's
not like we're overwhelmed with titles.

There's limited space on store shelves for Mac games, so the old ones
tend to go out in favor of new titles after a certain period of time.
Once the print run sells out, then doing another printing is prohibitive
since it requires pressing a far larger # of copies than will ever sell.

Carbon version of Alpha Centauri for Mac? Where can I get this? Can I
get this? I've been playing it in Classic for a long time, but it's
sluggish and has a few idiosyncrasies.

Yay. Now I have SMAX/Mac - From an nice purchase from eBay but sadly, it still won't let me save. I had hoped that the Carbon SMAX binary would be better than the SMAC one and that it would let me save - I could never save with the SMAC carbon runtime. No matter what, I can't....

HOI- gun calibres? - Does it make any difference if what size gun you put on your tanks? (IE, is a 50mm gun any improvement over a 30mm one?) The development cost and time is the same, so I was just wondering...

Where can I find Risk II? - Used or new. I searched the regular places but couldn't find any copy for sale... -Laurent. -- ================================================================= Laurent Daudelin Logiciels Nemesys Software..

Any Solace? - In the computer store today I noticed a game called ``Solace,'' which I don't remember seeing discussed here. The package is a bit vague but it looks like it's a fancier version of Risk. Has anyone played it, and is it something that would satisfy..
