Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>comm (more info?)

I just got around to updating to 10.4.11. Now I have the wonderful all
new exciting ground breaking marvel of Safari 3.0.4. Because I prefer
tiled browsing to tabbed browsing, I set the prefs for that. However,
now when I command-click on a link on a web page to open it in a new
window in front of the window I'm viewing, it opened BEHIND the one I
clicked on!?! WTF?!? Who in the world wants to open a link just to have
it HIDDEN???

How long has the cmd-click to open a new window IN FRONT of the existing
one been around? 5 or 10 years? How many browsers use this standard
keyboard shortcut? Most of 'em on this planet. So what numb-nuts at
Apple changed this behavior so I now have to hold down 2 modifier keys
instead of just one?

Most importantly, how do I change this abomination? I sifted through
Safari's plist to no avail. Perhaps a new version of Safari Enhancer or
the like? I searched Usenet postings since Nov. 1; nothing. I'm
surprised no one before me has complained. Perhaps the rest of you use
tabs.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

there's a checkbox to reverse it in preferences in the tabs panel (if i
recall correctly). i'm not on a machine with safari 3 at the moment so
unfortunately, i can't be more specific than that.

It's on the "Tabs" page of the Safari settings dialog. The second
checkbox is labeled "Select tabs and windows as they are created" and
defaults to off. That makes sense for tabs, IMO, but breaks the user
expectation for windows. Turn it on and you'll be back to the way you
should be.

Thank you, nospam, Gregory, and Michelle! Ya made my day. I had seen the
'Select tabs and windows as they are created' box, but didn't realize
'select' meant 'move to front'. Who'd 'a guessed? (And I had already
unchecked the 'new tab' box, but thanks for being thorough Michelle.)

I still don't understand why the _default_ would be _not_ to make the
new window the front-most. Just another mystery of the universe. Anyway,
tranquility has now returned to at least minimal levels. Thanks!

My Safarai 3.0.4 notes that there is a difference between
cmd-option-click and cmd-option-shift-click with respect to whether
the link is opened in a new window in front of or behind the current
one. I didn't bother to see if unchecking the "cmd-click opens a
link in a new tab" changed this at all. It's definitely in
Preferences -> Tabs, though.

Some of us take the attitude that the new window would be nice to look at

1. after it is completely loaded and
2. after I finish reading the paragraph that contained its link.

For us the new window or tab should not instantly be in front where
it interupts what we are currently doing.

Once I figured out that it could operate this way it made browsing
less of a contest with the browser! And even better that it was
often the default.

Some changes are for the better once our figure out what they provide.
Or, different strokes for different folks!

It's worth pointing out that cmd-shift-click will perform the opposite
effect: If that box is checked cmd-shift-click opens the new window in
the background, and if it's unchecked in the foreground. Similar
semantics for tabs.

Thanks for pointing this out, Gordon. Now, I at least see why you'd want
such a setting and the _ability_ to make it the default.

Yes, I do see that now, and I have no problem with providing users all
the options they want. However, with Gregory's point above, I still
don't see why Apple changed a long standing, industry-wide default, not
to mention used somewhat obscure language, for this setting.

Anyway, problem solved. Thanks again for your help!
