| If I want to save a web page using Firefox, I get a menu of location
including some recent save locations - but when my desired directory
isn't there, I haven't been able to figure out how to get to that
directory. What do I need to do?

As far as I know, all recent versions of Firefox use the standard OS X
save dialog -- so you can click on the down arrow next to the "Save As"
box, then navigate using the sidebar and file tree pane. Alternatively,
press Cmd + Shift + G to enter the directory path with the keyboard.

If the folder is showing in the Finder, you can drag it to the Save
dialog.

Yep.
This article illustrates the dialog in both states, and gives a neat tip
to change the default state for all save dialogs:

Hope this helps.

I see the file tree pane, but when I try to navigate it the way I do
the finder, I sometimes fail. Othertimes, I can navigate without any
problem. I haven't figured out the variable that stops me sometimes. >> Stay informed about: Save menu |

You fail how, exactly?

Sometimes, when I try to walk down the tree to the subfolder, I can't.
I click on the folder and it wants to save whatever I'm saving right
there, instead of opening for me to find a subfolder.
Maybe I'm downloading a different type of document - hmm, I just
tested with a web page and with a .jpg, and both of these worked. >> Stay informed about: Save menu |

If you mistakenly *double-click* a folder, the system will think you are
choosing that folder. Perhaps you are accidentally double-clicking a
folder.

Nice! It never occurred to me that there'd be a global preference to
change the default state, but now that you mention it, I'll have to add
that one to my "list of OS X tricks" file...
