If I ever meet the idiot who made the default on View Options "All
Windows", I'm going to break his knuckles so he can't write any more
stupid code.
If you want to have certain options on one window, but you don't
remember to push the radio button FIRST, whatever yo do will screw up
every other window you've ever set.
Is there any way to make the default be "This Window Only"?

I just opened a new Finder window and checked the view options. "This window
only" was checked.

I think I'm disagreeing wit you. Every time I open a *new* Finder window,
then open View Options "This window only" is checked. What am I missing?

CMD+N in the Finder.

I see what you mean. If I open various folders on my HD and check the view
options, some are set to 'All Windows', some are not.

What you're missing is that at some time in the past, you must have
changed the View Options for your home folder and set it for "This
window only". Finder windows are practically synonymous with folders,
so when you set view options "for this window only", you're really
setting them for that *folder*.
The New Finder Window command always opens your home folder, so when you
follow New Folder with Show View Options, you'll always see the view
options you've set for your home folder. >> Stay informed about: Setting View Options |

I think your solution will probably work, if you can find him. But if
you once change it to 'this window only' it will stay that way
universally. In a way that might be worse, because you might get used to
it being that way and then screw up again after a re-install. I don't
use the finder much.
