Post subject: Size of text field in HC/SC
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>hypercard (more info?)

Hi,

I've used HyperCard a lot in the past 12 years and my largest project
was an application for my wife, which stores information of all her
numerous clients.

I've switched to OS X last year, installed HC and the stack still runs
fine (after discovering the "Tiger workaround").

Now I'm thinking about switching the app to SuperCard because I like the
better integration of SC in the OS X user interface.

Seeing the number of clients in the stack increasing I expect the
maximum size of the text field on card 1 (32K) to be a limit in the
foreseeable future.

Does anybody know if this limit still exist in SuperCard? I installed
the trial version but the manuals and the website had no answer to this
question.

Thanks for your help.

regards

Martin

Wow! SuperCard is so HyperCard like!

Within 2 minutes I wrote a little test application and I had no problems
to put 236992 chars into a single text field. I think that should
suffice for the clients of the next five years.

So this question is solved but if anyone has good hints for porting
stacks from HC to SC they are very welcome.

regards

Martin

Martin,

SuperCard has no limits on text fields nor scripts. It does still use
Apple's list manager for list fields so those will be limited to 32k...
but you can get around that as well using the ListMaster external.

What is this "Tiger workaround" please?
Are you referring to Classic mode or something else?

There seems to be a bug that only occurs in the combination of HyperCard
and Tiger. If you store HyperCard on the system drive it cannot write to
its home stack nor to other stacks located on the system drive. It opens
them readonly.

This does not occur when you store HyperCard and your stacks on a
separate drive which may also be mounted disk image.

You can keep and use yours stacks in the "Shared" folder on the system
drive too.

Hi Martin,

Have you tried Revolution (http://www.runrev.com)? Its available for
MacOS X (and Universal Binary!), Windows and Linux, and allows cross
platform deployment.

Hi,

Although I am a Revolution user myself, if Martin wants to
create software specifically for Mac OS X and is sure that he
will never need cross-platform capability, he probably wants
SuperCard.

Best,

Mark

Isn't that the SDK that claims to be Visual Basic compatible?
I think I don't like that.

Just to tell you how this story ended: After looking at SuperCard and
Realbasic (because it contains SQLite) I recently ran into CoreData. And
after studying

<http://developer.apple.com/cocoa/coredatatutorial/index.html>

and some other sources I finished the prototype of the new app for my
wife in two evenings. With nothing but a fresh copy of XCode and Tiger.

If you combine CoreData app with AppleScript you get a quite good
successor of HC!

best regards
