Slow startup times

This is the second such report I've seen since the release of 10.5.3 - if it
keeps up I may just have to move up from 10.5.0... And maybe even put the
ol' G5 on Leopard:-)

With the latest updates and 10.5.3, I have disabled WYSIWYG font display, deleted all the files specified, and rebooted.

Word now starts in 15 sec best case. Best case is right after starting and exiting. In more normal cases it's like 30 sec. It rebuilds fonts even when no fonts have changed, not all the time, but times when it shouldn't.

15-30 sec would be fine for Photoshop, but it's scandalous for a word processor. However it's much better than several minutes, which is what I had before.

Currently I use Textedit to display Word documents where possible, using Word only when I absolutely have to have compatibility with a PC user.

This needs to get fixed.

Actually, Photoshop starts much faster than Word.

"Scandalous"? Oh, please. So what if it takes a long time to load? Fire
it up and go and make a coffee -- and elevate your blood pressure over
something worth getting exercised about!

Yes, you would expect that. PhotoShop is a much simpler application.

15 seconds is a bout right: if you want it faster, trim those fonts back.
Each font is using memory, which is wasted if the font is not in use.

The font cache must be rebuilt each time the working set changes. If no
fonts have been enabled or disabled since Word last quit, you will get a
much faster start-up.
