Student Select and Office for Mac 2008

I have had Office 2008 installed for 3 weeks and today tried to instal the downloaded upgrade 12.0.1. When I try to upgrade the installer stops at the select a destination. After it searches for the volume it comes back with "...cannot install... A version of the software required...was not found on this volume"
I only have the Macintosh HD volume which is were the Office 2008 was installed. Path: Macintosh HD/Applications/ MS Office 2008.
Any ideas how I can get the installer to select the volume? or can I do it manually somehow?

How do you insert a picture from a scanner? I scan pictures and letters into Word quite often. It was in the Insert/Picture menu in Office 2004. I cannot find it anywhere in Office 2008. Both versions of Office are the Home & Student Edition.

Scanning directly into a Word document required Twain support which was not
retained in Office 2008. You'll have to save your scan as a file then use
Insert/Picture - From File instead.

I don't know that it will make any difference, but if you can substantiate
that the loss of the feature is a detriment to your workflow I'd suggest
that you use Help> Send Feedback to ensure it's being tracked on MacBU's
radar... The more requests submitted the more likely it is to be reinstated
- but there are no guarantees:-)

I have heard a lot of different opinions regarding Office 2008 on Mac. I have just switched back to Mac from PC, I'm running a MacBook 2.2Ghz.

Most of the professional reviews I have read about Office 2008 have been positive but many other user reviews have been extremely negative, with reports of bugs and constant crashes and unexpected quits, as well as time lags.

What is Microsoft's position on this and are there any planned updates to iron out these bugs? I have 8 days remaining on my Office 2004 trial before I have to decide whether or not to purchase Office 2008. I would have done it no questions asked until I read so many negative reviews...

Hi Cartz -

The bottom line is that you can't rely on someone else to tell you what
*you* need. There's some degree of truth to what others have to say, but you
need to identify your needs & determine which product suits them best.You
also have the option of going with 2004 now & upgrading to 2008 later at a
reduced rate, whereas you can't "downgrade" - although you can return 2008
within the 'satisfaction guarantee' period & purchase 2004 instead.

Keep in mind that most of the postings you see from users are from those who
have experienced problems - those who have no problems rarely take the time
to post about how pleased they are. Many of the problems are actually the
result of issues that existed before installing the software as well as
improper preparation/installation in the first place. And then you always
have the contingent that are perennial complainers - they'll complain &
criticize no matter what:-)

Any new release is going to have its share of "bugs" but most will be
resolved over time & many of those reported bugs are merely perceived
because the software is simply *different* than what the user is accustomed
to and expects... Or prefers.

Nobody here can tell you what Microsoft's "position" is because we're *not*
Microsoft & can't speak for the company. And the few 'Softies who pop in
here can only say so much. Experience has shown, however, that MS certainly
will do whatever they can to continue improvement of 2008. By the same
token, some of what certain users 'don't like' won't necessarily be changed
if it's an intended design difference.

I just installed a 300+ MB "critical update" for Office 2008 (Dutch version). Now Entourage crashes every time I try to collect my e-mail. Help? Please?

There are other issues with the Dutch versions. See the post "[ANN] Fonts
increasing in size - follow-up"

A temporary workaround for users who enabled the Dutch dictionary would be
to switch to the English dictionary for now. Please note you will have to
re-launch Entourage for the change to happen.

I'm interested in this problem too, which didn't get addressed.
I received an PC .xlsx file from a colleague and it won't open in Mac as an Excel file, but only as a word compatibility file, which doesn't include all the data in the file. I got Office 08 expressly for this purpose.
Please advise. Thanks.

I find that I have no problem opening Word documents from a PC but for some reason PC users have a real difficulty with my documents. Try dragging the file to Excel in the Dock and try forcing Excel to open it.

I should add that this applies even to documents saved as Word 97-2004 documents. It also seems to have "infected" documents created with previous version, ie Office 2004.
