Compared to Entourage, I find MT-NewsWatcher to have many more features
that I like. (I am using OS 10.5.2.) Mostly, I have run into minor
quirks that I can tolerate.

The one thing that is driving me crazy is that the application freezes
when I respond to a post. The problem is with MT-NewsWatcher because a
forced quit always seems to leave the system in good shape.

Am I doing something terribly wrong? What suggestions do you have for a
better USEBET reader?

Bill

I use Apple Mail as my email client and Thunderbird as my news reader.
It has the exact features I like and have 0 issues with it......and it's
free as well.
Just a suggestion. You might give it a look.

I'm having problems with MTNW 3.5.3b2 in 10.5.2 as well. It crashes
while it's quitting at random times. It says "Cleaning up" and then
shuts down before it's finished and brings up the system message about
shutting down unexpectedly. I push the "ignore" button, and it seems to
be okay. It doesn't happen every time.

Sometimes MTNW crashes when I try to send an article which is annoying
if I've spent some time composing some elegant and thoughtful prose for
y'all to read. Well, that's not very often, I guess.

My update to 10.5.2 more-or-less coincided with my using a new NNTP
server that uses a "secure connection," I don't know if the two things
are related to these MTNW problems.

I don't want to use anything else, though, except maybe Gnus.

What I have done, is to copy the text of the message to the clipboard.
Then, if I get a crash, I have the text available for a repost.
Sometimes, the post is made before the crash (freeze). Nevertheless, it
is most annoying.

You're runnings version 3.5.3b2, he's running 3.5.2. I don't know if
that contributes to the difference, but he could easily find out.

Unison is a cool little news reader. I had downloaded it and didn't
think much of it, but one night so bored I started clicking and going
to whatever newsgroups and some of the features are pretty cool.

Same here. Rock solid, and no delays either.

Bill, why don't you try version 3.5.3b1 which is what I am using right
now on my PowerPC G5 with Mac OS X 10.5.2 and it works fine, as it does
on my MacBook Pro, also with Mac OS X 10.5.2.

Why not the most recent version instead?

All of the MT-Newswatchers use polling threading rather than blocking
threading for tasks. That means the threads run non-stop and 99.9999%
of that time is spent discovering that there's nothing to do yet. The
CPU consumption is especially bad on Intel systems. A few concurrent
downloads will get the fans racing or run a laptop battery dead.

I hater taking a chance on a beta version--but it is probably worth a
try.

I have found the NW acutally posts the message before it freezes!

I had the same problem after upgrading to 10.5.2. An upgrade to the
latest version of MTNW cleared that.

It always was for me too, until quite recently. The changes in my cages
seem to be 10.5.2 (on a Mac Pro) and connecting to an nntp server with
ssh. I won't downgrade the OS of course, and this server requires ssh to
post.

I do the same thing the OP does: when I'm composing a longish post, I
copy it to the clipboard once in a while, and before I hit the "post"
button, so's not to lose it all if MTNW crashes. I hate having to be
that paranoid.
