I have an Intel Mac Pro. Top indicates that MT-NW is using between 2 and
10 percent of the cpu, while it's doing stuff. "Idle," it sits at about
3 percent. Is that considered excessive, or am I misreading the data
(wouldn't be the first time). Top itself uses more than that.

Mine doesn't -- it crashes and goes away and doesn't post the message.
This happens very rarely -- only twice I think since I started having
problems. The other issue, where MTNW crashes while it's quitting and
"cleaning up," happens about every third time I quit the app.

Well, considering the last stable release isn't all that stable for you,
why would you not try it? Besides, you can go back to your current
version if this one is even more problematic for you.

Interesting. I've used it on several different computers and it has
always maxed out the CPU while downloading. I wonder if there's an
adjustment to its sleep time?

Has anyone mentioned PAN from the wonderful world of Unix/Linux
pan.rebelbase.com?
Very full featured, configurable, stable, high-performance...and as F/OSS
it's free.

Which OS did you download it for? Did it run right off the bat? Or did

Hi Phil,
With its pure heart of gold, that is to say Unix, there are so many
excellent apps that can be run in OS X - The GIMP, Ardour2, Audacity, LyX,
Scribus, Inkscape, OpenOffice.org/NeoOffice (native), AbiWord and countless
more.
Two download and install systems have large application repositories
and will take care of any dependencies while building the program package
right on your Mac: Fink and Darwin Ports. I use the latter, and this
page both shows you how little is involved in taking advantage of this as
well as pan2 itself:
http://pan2.darwinports.com/
Have fun!

Or you can just download the source from
<http://pan.rebelbase.com/download/releases/0.14.2/SOURCE/>, unpack the
archive, and compile it yourself with a the standard:
./configure
make
sudo make install
Use the Source™ ; )

Jeff - I thought Macports was a commercial graphical interface to
free Darwin Ports. Frank

Fair enough. Porticus is a good suggestion in that case. To make things
clear anything available through macports will be available through
Porticus.
