Post subject: Thoth "unsupported header" field Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>comm (more info?)
|

I've been attempting to transition from my previous ISP's news server
to my new one's (comcast). I use Thoth. For the comp.sys.mac.system
group, I now get an error on an attempted open. The Thoth log file
reports an "unsupported header" field.
If I read the log correctly, it is objecting to "XHDR NNTP-Posting-Host
732925-732935". Shouldn't the server itself be filtering out such a
message if indeed it has an invalid header. Of course, I can't do
anything about any messages in a group that have invalid parts. Do any
of you know what this is really about? Is this likely a Thoth problem
or a newsgroups.comcast.net problem? Up until today, I could read the
same group from *.rr.com (roadrunner), but now that newserver reports
that "access is denied to your node". I sure am use to Thoth. Any help
with this would be appreciated. >> Stay informed about: Thoth ""unsupported header"" field |

Comcast uses Giganews and they don't provide all the headers. So if you
have any XOVER filters then you have a problem. Delete those filters.
Filters like on path, organization, newsgroups headers.

More precisely:
Giganews doesn't *index* most headers in their overview.fmt database.
When a news reader evaluates a filter, it sends the XHDR command to the
server to obtain filtered lists of messages based on the filter
criteria. The XHDR command is limited to the same set of headers as the
XOVER command - namely only those headers contained in the overview.fmt
database. So when you create a filter in that looks at a header that is
not in the server's overview.fmt database, the server bitches that that
header is not supported.
Giganews confirmed to me that their overview.fmt database contains only
these headers:
Subject
From
Date
Message-ID
References
Bytes
Lines
Xref:full
If you try to create a filter in MT-NW for any other header, the news
reader bitches about it and won't open news groups anymore.
You're in luck, though. Supernews *does* index most news headers in
their database. And Supernews happens to be a bit cheaper than Giganews,
to boot:
<http://supernews.com/>
Many here have switched from Giganews to Supernews (myself included) and
have high praises of Supernews in comparison.
Not only does Supernews index all headers (or at least most of them), it
also does much better server-side SPAM filtering. That means a large
majority of the SPAM that others see in these news groups simply never
shows up to Supernews users. The amount of SPAM I see after switching
from Giganews to Supernews dropped dramatically! That, in itself, is
reason enough to switch if you ask me!

I've edited my filters list for comp.sys.mac.system to only have the
filters that rely on Subject or From. I still get the complaint. Can
you think of somewhere else besides the filter list that would have my
previous filters on things like NNTP Host?

Well, for me, Giganew is as cheap as it gets: free. That is, it is
"free" with my comcast subscription.

And Thoth does the same as MT-NW.
Comcast outsources to Giganews for Usenet and provides it for free to
subscribers. So Supernews would be an extra cost to the other person.
Still I think it is worth it. I am paying for Supernews even though I
am also on Comcast. In addition to the other things you mentioned about
Supernews I also like to have Usenet when I am not home and hooked up
to cable. You can't use the Comcast provided Giganews when you are not
at home.

Did you check for global filters? You may and probably do have other
filters besides just for comp.sys.mac.system.

Same here. I actually paid for Supernews for a couple months until I
learned Earthlink, my provider, was getting rid of their news servers in
favor of *drum roll* Supernews outsourced service! So now I get
Supernews for free. Yay! : )

I'm not familiar with Thoth, so someone else may be better able to help
you there.

Right, but you may determine that "free" isn't as important as "works
well". ; )
For what it's worth, the cheapest Supernews account is only $3.95 a
month. That's not a bad price, all things considered, IMO.

Thanks to you, Charles and JR, for your helpful comments. I'm now able
to read articles, after having rebuilt my filters. The bad news is that
some filters that cleared away junk are now gone.
I'll try this for a while, then may go with Supernews. Thanks, again,
folks.

Information about this is available in the webpage

Thanks, Jean-Pierre. The article does explain the real issues with
non-standard headers. I long ago abandoned the effort to filter on
non-standards, although that takes away some convenient means of
kill-fileing spam. Understanding the problems with overloading the
server makes that pill a little easier to swallow.

This information is no more available, but a new 1.8.4 version is now
released. It fixes at least the problem.
It fixes an other problem too about « ever-growing RAM use when doing
lots of file reads and writes. »
