Somehow yes... Applications like TextEdit support Unicode. I suspect you
need unicode for these characters and Office X does not support it. Only
Office 2004 does...

That entirely depends on what font you are using. Office 2004 comes with
some pretty complete Unicode fonts (like TImes New ROman) that really
contain a LOT of characters.

For the character palette, it depends on the font you are using (in
Unicode applciations of Course).
Now as far as Office goes, you can probably give a try to Office 2004.
