I'd not trust the stock driver out of the box.
My HP 3550 on USB had a driver on CD that was known to be buggy. I
went to the HP web site, located the printer, and got the latest
driver there.
I noticed that after download I had lost a couple of user options but
th eprinter worked fine afterward.
Some fo the older HP drivers in the 600-900 series have an interaction
with the operating system at installation so you cannot copy a driver
installed on another similar computer. You need to do a clean install.
Also, in dealing with the older HPs, I found there is a trick, not
well documented with respect to installation.
First remove all vestiges of older driver associated with that
printer. Remove it to a holding folder if you think you need it.
Install the new driver. DO NOT associate it with the CHOOSER if the
driver also has an update of any kind.
Quit out before associating with the CHOOSER and run the updater
FIRST.
Then do a restart and reboot.
Now, after restart select the printer in the Chooser.
Now restart and reboot again and rebuild the desktop.
If all is will with life, you should now be able to print.
In my case my USB driver loads and remains idle on the system. The
module is located in the OS 9 start up folder.
Hope this helps.
