Hi,
I've downloaded and installed RDC Beta 2 for the Mac. I've also
configured my XP Pro desktop to accept Remote Desktop connection in my
Windows Firewall. The Mac laptop is simply connected wirelessly to
the internet; the XP desktop is connected to a cable modem to the
internet. I have a dynamic IP address.
When I attempt to enter this dynamic IP address into RDC, I get this
error message:
The Mac cannot connect to the Windows-based computer
I'm no expert, and am confused about this, but perhaps there is an
issue with port 3389: on my Windows desktop, using a port reading
utility I see my computer's IP address runs on port 3389, but when I
my public IP address (at least thats what I think its called), it is
blocked and I think it runs on a different port.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Steve >> Stay informed about: Unable to Connect to XP Pro |

Hi Steve!
You need to port forward 3389 from your router to your Windows machine.
Because you have a dynamic IP address I suggest you first look into a
free service such as DynDNS
<http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/>. This will allow you to use
a name that doesn't change rather than an IP address that may change.
Then you need to port forward port 3389 on your router. Have a look at
these instructions for the complete setup
<http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20051122_how_to_use_remote_desktop_connection_rdc.html>.
Hope this helps!

Hi Bill,
Thanks for your answer...
Hi Al,
I've tried to follow the instructions from the link you provided but
I'm confused about the port forwarding and how to accomplish this.
I've found the DSL modem's IP address, and it is dynamic, and think I
know the port it is running on (2420). Running the Port Query Tool, I
can also tell the modem's IP is in fact "Listening" on port 2420, not
on port 3389 (used for remote access).
I believe the idea is to change the modem's port from 2420? Or to
change the remote access port from 3389 to 2420? Then I need to enter
the IP address:[port number] in the Remote Access field from my Mac?
I've tried to change the port using regedit to 2420: no luck. I've
also tried to create a new service on my modem, and picked port 2420
and then tried 3389: still no luck.
Thanks for your help! Regards, Steve >> Stay informed about: Unable to Connect to XP Pro |

Hi Steve!
Your DSL line is not running on any ports. It's the gateway between your
computer and the Internet. Consider a "port" to be a mini-gateway
through which traffic can pass.
For example...
Port 80 is the gateway for all incoming HTML web browser traffic.
Port 25 is the gateway for all outgoing SMTP E-mail traffic. And
Port 3389 is the gateway for all incoming RDC traffic.
2420 is a common port for DSL modem management traffic, which means
it's open to allow an application to connect and change settings on the
router. It only points to the management software on the modem.
I encourage you to have a look again at the link I provided you earlier.
It's really a good explanation.
Hope this helps!

Hi Bill,
Thanks for your response. I think things are a bit clearer, but still
no luck! Here's what I did, after reviewing the document again:
--In my modem--a Westell 2200--I added a "service" with the port range
of 50001 to 50001
--Added Base Host Port: 50001
--Entered my machine's IP
--Enabled service
--In regedit, I changed PortNumber to 50001
--In the Remote Desktop Client on my Mac, I entered the modem's IP
QUESTION: Is this correct? Or use my machine's IP?
QUESTION: Do I need to append the port, :50001?
--Entered my Widows credentials
--Left "Domain" as the modem's IP
QUESTION: is this correct? Or should I leave this blank or use my own
domain, stevegiovinco.com?
Thanks! Steve >> Stay informed about: Unable to Connect to XP Pro |

You'll enter your modem's external IP address (not the internal).
> QUESTION: Do I need to append the port, :50001?
Yes.

Although you can pre-populate your name, password and domain, I suggest
you leave these blank. Filling in these fields is simply a time saver
for connecting.
Question for you: The Mac and Windows machines are on different networks
(such as a home and work network) and not on the same network (both at
home or both at work), right? And you're attempting to connect the Mac
to the Windows machine across the Internet?
Hope this helps!
