Looks to me like your friend is used to mashing his fingers on the
keyboard in certain ways to produce certain non-ASCII characters, and
the Mac uses different mashes than he's used to.
Opt-[ = ³ (double-left)
Opt-Shift-[ = ² (double-right)
Opt-] = Œ (single-left)
Opt-Shift-] = ¹ (single-right)
