Version Confusion

I am using version 7.1.3.0267 for Mac OS X. Frustrated at the number
of unsupported codecs, I went to HELP/CHECK FOR PLAYER UPGRADE
which took me to a Microsoft webpage.

The webpage offered a download for OS X, but nowhere in the
documentation is there any mention of what version it is that is
downloadable. So how do I know if I should upgrade or not? 7MB is a
lot to download just to end up finding out it's the same version I
already have!

This seems rather poor forethought from Microsoft. The Apple
upgrade system (including QuickTime) seems to be lightyears ahead.

That is the latest version of WMP for OSX.
