View options not sticking in OSX

Has anyone else had this problem? Regardless of the view options I
select, which for me is usually sort by name, I consistently find the
sort is lost after restarting the computer. Even opening and closing a
few windows often results in this behaviour. This even happens when I
select the option for 'all windows'. I'm on 10.3.3 but I've had this on
my G5 from 10.2.8 through all the updates until now, but not in 10.1.5
on my iBook. I am on a G5 1.8Ghz/1Gb RAM.

This normally happens when you are in the boot disk (not user folder)
because you don't have permission to alter contents even through window
resizing, etc.
If it's happening even in your userfolder maybe permissions are messed up.
