I would enter the password imediately after extracting it from your son,
preferably while he is still screaming.
It seems as though there is more than just a password issue. Try zapping
the PRAM (Press and hold these keys at start-up until you hear the tone
three times: command option P R)
You can also try resetting the reset button located somewhere on the
back of your Wallstreet. Check the user guide available on Apple's site:

But if that were the issue you wouldn't get the flashing "?"
Try booting from a utility like Diskwarrior, TechTool Pro or Norton.
He could have messed with the open firmware but then you wouldn't be
able to boot off the CD so that is not the issue:
