Upgrade to Firefox 2 if at all possible - there are known problems
with 1.5 that will not be fixed, as development on that version has
ceased.
Then try looking at the NoScript plugin - this enables you to
enable/disable Javascript on a site-by-site basis as you browse.
http://noscript.net or look at the Firefox plugins page. >> Stay informed about: Wanting to disable pop-up search menus in my Web browser |

If you want my advice:
Do upgrade to the latest version of Firefox.
But forget NoScript. Iit makes web browsing a bit of a pain, because
there are some scripts you want to run for normal browsing, and it
disables them all unless you manually override them for each web page
you view.
Instead, RUN (don't walk) to this web page and install AdBlock Plus!
With AdBlock Plus, ads will simply disappear forever, and you will
wonder how you did without it all this time:
AdBlock Plus:

I guess that depends on your personal browsing habits. Most of the
sites I visit use Javascript either to push advertising, or to make
the site "work" in internet explorer. I'm not really interested in
either case, so I don't really care if the script doesn't run, or
there are odd gaps in the layout (bbc.co.uk is the latest casualty
on this front, since they started pushing ads from doubleclick.)
NoScript gives you a very convenient menu item to allow or temporarily
allow scripts on sites that it is blocking. I've used AdBlock in the
past, but I haven't really needed it in FF 2 - the built in image
blocking works pretty well!

Yes, for me, it won't do. I visit various credit card, banking,
insurance, and other web sites that require scripts for normal
operation. While NoScript is just too much of a pain in those
situations, AdBlock Plus blocks the bad content without causing problems
with these web sites.

Yes, and it is great at what it does. I agree with that.

Hold on. AdBlock Plus is NOT AdBlock - nowhere near it - light years
ahead of it, and better than anything you have seen with the older
AdBlock or with NoScript. To start with, it's now auto-subscription
based, and blocks a literal 99.9% of ads automatically with *zero*
configuration or maintenance. No other ad blocker can say that. I'm
pretty sure if you gave AdBlock Plus a try, you'd quickly find yourself
delighted with it! ; )

You'll need to better describe what exactly you mean by "pop-up search
menus" then, because I'm afraid a lot of us have no idea what you are
talking about.
Also, it perfectly reasonable to expect that AdBlock Plus will be able
to help you block these things even though they aren't considered "ads"
in your mind. The only way to know for sure is to try it.

What makes you think you can't do either of these things with AdBlock
Plus? Have you even tried?
Have you tried any of the other solutions people have offered you in
this thread?

My kingdom for the same! Those little boxes are very irritating. >> Stay informed about: Wanting to disable pop-up search menus in my Web browser |
