I've run into the dredded Win & Mac scenario. I need my
OS X 10.3 and Win XP-Home Ed. computers to talk to each
other because both contain vital information. I attempted
to use the Mac instructions of setting up a network
between the two but boy that didn't turn out right. As I
bridged the connections, online service became
unavailable and my windows wasn't finding another
computer at all. I receive wireless internet via Airport,
which just turns my single T-1 line into two, one for the
Mac and one for this Win. Also, as I setup a user account
for the Windows computer to log on the Mac as, I did not
find a "Allow user to login from Windows" check box. I'm
up for any help I can get right about now. I'm not sure
what VNC is but, I would really appreciate it if someone
could walk me through a tried and true method they used
to get their Mac & Win computers to talk.

Hi Mike!

Regarding your "Allow user to login from Windows" check, ignore this
when using 10.3. It doesn't apply anymore.

I'm unsure what you mean by "bridged the connections". Both computers
should be receiving IP addresses from your Airport and the first three
octets (the numbers separated by dots) of each IP address should be the
same such as 10.1.0.2 and 10.1.0.3. The last octet will be unique to
each machine. Make sure this is working properly before trying to
connect the two machines.

The best advice I can give about user accounts is to make sure that both
machines have identical user names with identical passwords. It's
possible to use different on each machine but connecting requires much
more work.

You don't need VNC. It's a completely different solution from file
sharing. This allows you to remote control another machine, not exchange
files.

After you've turned on file sharing on the Mac, you can do the following
on the PC: Start --> Run --> "\\mac'sIPaddress\username" --> OK.

From the Mac you can choose Go --> Connect -->
"smb://pc'sIPaddress/nameOfSharedFolder" or "smb://pc'sIPaddress/c$".

Hope this helps! bill

Thanks Bill!

Sorry I've not checked back in a bit. I posted one before
this that didn't make it through (probably my fault) and
so I kind of wasn't expecting this one to I guess.

Well, both IP Addresses are in my possession but I'm
unclear as to where/how to start getting the computers to
start seeing each other. I've enabled file sharing on the
Mac and rather clueless as to what needs to happen next
with the Win. I'm not really sure what to look for now
either. I'm going to setup an identical account on the
Mac for the Win and see what I can find.

I appreciate your help!

I've connected 4 extending cords together to a printer
across the office and it tells me it's an "Unknown
Device". Thanks.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Hi Mike!

File sharing in Windows is turned on by default. To share a folder you
simply need to right-click it, choose Sharing and select the option to
share.

This will become part of the connect string you enter in Mac OS X when
you choose Go --> Connect. You'll enter (without the quotes)
"smb://windowsIPaddress/sharedFolderName".

Try this connection first since it's the easier of the two.

As for USB, your Windows machine doesn't recognize the printer because
it doesn't have the drivers for it installed. Go to the website of the
manufacturer of the printer and download and install the drivers for
your specific printer model. Then Windows should be able to recognize
the printer.

Hope this helps! bill

Alright, I'll give it another go. Thanks, I'll let you
know how it went.

Also, I figured out I had one too many USB Extensions
connected, so I had to rearrange the room to get it a bit
closer.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
