[whiteit]Prior to downsizing house, had wife's G3 iBook, my G5 iMac PPC, HP
Laserjet all working internet (Telewest, modem) and printing
via Linksys cable router, with the iBook in the study, working via
ethernet cable through wall to the Linksys in the computer room.
Now we've no study, and computer room in new place is too small for both
machines, hence:
1) would a USB dongle allow the iBook to connect to a wireless router
beside my iMac, linking to the current wired router, and letting us both
access internet and printer? (This old iBook can't use Airport Extreme,
and original Airport is off the market).
If so, what make/model recommended>
2) Alternatively, we could route an ethernet cable through walls and
downstairs, but I don't know if there's a length limit for the cable?
Replacing the iBook with a recent Apple laptop would be another
possibility, but can't really justify cost of this option.
Any suggestions gratefully received,
Bill >> Stay informed about: Wireless solution for G3 iBook ?? |

a usb dongle should work if there are mac drivers available, however,
the original airport cards can still be found. in fact, there are a
bunch of them on ebay right now. >> Stay informed about: Wireless solution for G3 iBook ?? |

I would definitely try to get hold of an internal card!

Just a NOTE here, Ethernet wire lengths are a published Spec.
10BaseT 200 Meters between Active Device and HUb, 4 Hubs per Segment,
and it will run on either CAT 5, OR CAT 3 wire.
100BaseT 100 Meters between Active Device and Switch, NO Hubs allowed,
and it only runs on CAT 5 Wire. >> Stay informed about: Wireless solution for G3 iBook ?? |

We have a G3 iBook that does wireless just fine with our Airport Extreme
base station and other newer Macs. But if you're saying that your iBook
has no Airport card, I just found a bunch of them on eBay. >> Stay informed about: Wireless solution for G3 iBook ?? |
