I am using Mac Excel 2004 for personal use, and Windows Excel
2003/2007 for office use.
I am experiencing the same problem over and over again. Here is the
example. I created a workbook, Letter-size landscape table, in Windows
Excel 2003. It exactly fits in single page in Windows. When I open the
same file in Mac Excel 2004, however, the table does not fit in single
page, like it did in Windows Excel. That is, while all seven columns
were shown in one page in Windows Excel, only six columns are in one
page and the last column is shown in the next page in Mac Excel.
I matched the margin and cell width, as well as the same font and same
size. It looks like that even though all of the specifications are
identical, Mac Excel displays the font a little bit larger.
Because I am using both Windows and Mac, it is quite troubling that
Excel worksheets created in Mac are not correctly displayed in Windows
Excel, or vice versa.
Is this a known issue? If so, how can I make a single Excel file can
be shown identical in both Windows and Mac Excel?

Well, it's a known issue for both cross-platform and intra-platform
implementations. The first thing to realize is that XL is not a page
layout application, so it's not designed around pixel-perfect layout.
Nor is Word, nor are many, many cross-platform applications, so I'm not
sure why you're "troubled".
While fonts may have similar names, fonts vary between platforms (and
between computers and installed fonts in some printers). If an exact
match is not available, a "close" match will be used - silently.
The best matches will be with fonts provided by MS in MacOffice.
There's also the possibility of print driver differences causing layout
differences, even when using two printers from the same computer. Make
sure that the print drivers are the most up-to-date.
If you want to set the printout to one-page wide, you may get better
results using Page Setup/Page, and set the workbook to print 1 page wide
(leaving the "pages tall" box blank). |

This has always been an issue for all the reasons John explains - which
revolve around the fact that Macs display at 72 ppi whereas Windows PCs
display at 96 ppi.

PC's can be set to display at 100 dpi as well.
so fonts on PC write each point in a pattern on left and Mac as on Right

so you figure point sizes and the room taken up for same exact font.
The same font at 10 Pt looks 96/72 as large on a Mac.
The same font at 10 Pt looks 72/96 as large on a PC

I think I have a similar problem
I am emailed a Word 2003 document for updating in 2004 for Mac. There is an embedded object that I double click to open a small Excel spreadsheet into which I enter numbers. On opening the spreadsheet, the object is automatically enlarged which throws the right-hand end into the right margin, so that is unprintable.
What is worse, I close the Word document, saving it in 2004 for Mac and then email it as an attachment back to the originator using Mail. They reopen in 2003 for windows, and can see the whole document including the amended object, but when they print it, the object area is blank. If they Preview the document, the numbers in the object are greyed. I dont know if this is the result of emailing the doc back and forwards, or a setting in either of our Words or Excels is wrong. >> Stay informed about: Worksheet created in Windows Excel is displayed differentl.. |

hello
a basic question: just migrated from PC so unused to how Excel presents worksheets in Mac. I use the insert command to create an additional worksheet but I "lose" the original worksheet from view. Of course it's there somewhere but I don't know how I can switch between worksheets (on Excel in PC there is a little label at bottom left corner).

Look in Excel preferences-General. Unclick use R1C1 reference style. Does
this fix your problem?

HERMANN SMITH -
For me, the most reliable method is (1) to use Excel to open and save a
workbook file on the desktop (or other local drive folder) and (2) to use a
file manager (Windows Explorer or click and drag) to move the file to and
from an external drive (e.g., your Lexar USB stick).
I generally avoid using Excel to open or save directly to an external drive.

Very simple. Save the file. Then insert your memory stick, go to the finder
and drag the file to the stick.
