Can versions 15 or 16 of MacLink Plus Deluxe read old WriteNow files on
an Intel-processor MacBook running Tiger? -- or not?
The list of translatable formats in the MacLink Plus documentation says
they can translate WriteNow files, although read only. My registered
copy of MLPD 15 apparently can't -- or anyway, won't -- do so.
How about the DataViz/MLPD website giving us a definitive answer to this
repeated query . . . ? >> Stay informed about: WriteNow documents and MacLink Plus? (Hello, DataViz?) |

My MLPD 16 won't read WriteNow 2.0 files. The website says it will
translate version 3 and 4, but lists 2 as "no longer supported:"

Yeah, that's too bad. When I dig out an old WN file from 1986 or 1987,
there doesn't seem to be any easy way to tell just what version created
it.
[And since my impression is that WN was a very stable product throughout
its regrettably limited lifespan, I wonder what it is that limits the
translation capability to versions 3 and 4.] >> Stay informed about: WriteNow documents and MacLink Plus? (Hello, DataViz?) |

You know, you could have simply asked for advice on how to read WriteNow
documents in the first place.

You regressed to using one? Text editors?

Ah yes. Very true. I'd have to put 90% of my volumein such programs.
Pages when I need to make something purty with pictures and stuff. Hmm.
The reality is that I do most of my purty in iWeb or in another
web-thang before it... Sheesh, I barely use a wordprocessor either.

Yikes, I'm not very self-aware. I just realized tat 90% of my typing I
do I do on DevonThink. Including the raw material of anything that
would go into iWeb.
I don't think I'd quite grasped that till now. Wow!

DataViz for some reason has been pulling old formats out of their product -
last I tried, it would no longer translate old MacWrite files.
I have trouble figuring out why though ... I suppose moving the app forward
into MacOS X may have had something to do with it - though you'd think that
after having once written it, it would be a product asset worth preserving.
Let's face it, all their product does is translate from one format to
another, and being able to open old documents is the main reason I keep
buying it.
Complain to DataViz, and if you're still running Tiger or below you might be
able to get a copy of an older historical version - that's what they gave me
when I complained (though the support guy gave me a speech about how I was no
longer licensed for it due to the fact that I had upgraded about a zillion
times).
Somehow I doubt that the translation engine has changed that much - so it
really puzzles me why they keep dumping translators. Maybe it doesn't sell
many copies and they've cut back on maintenance staff.
