Post subject: Wrong bit rate on Multiple Bit Rate Videos
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsmedia>player>mac (more info?)

Whenever I try to play a file that is encoded using multiple bitrates, the
Mac version of the player (9.0.0) always plays the lowest bitrate. This is a
huge problem for most of the streamed content, because it's very common for
content providers to use multiple bitrate encoding. I'm tired of seeing
low-quality video regardless of my broadband connection. Does anyone know a
get around?

It's a bug in WMP. It always selects the slowest bitrate no matter what
your pref say.
The only workaround I found was to downlaod the .asf file on my drive,
edit it with a text editor (I suggest the EXCELLLLLLEEENNNTTT
TextWrangler: now free from <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.barebones.com/" target="_blank">http://www.barebones.com/</a>) find the link for
the bitrate you want and use it directly in WMP through the Open URL
command,
