I don't know if this is the correct NG for this Q, here goes. If I'm
off-base, just tell me so.

I'm running OSX v.10.4.10 and I have a number of X11 apps running under
XDarwin/X11.

At one time, they worked as advertised, but somewhere along the way, the
following has come to pass:

I launch, say, Gimp, and X11 launches as does the app. But I never see the
app, merely the Aqua menu bar and the blue Apple and the application name.
Under the app name I have:

Services
Hide Gimp
Hide others
Quit

But I never see the menus or windows for the actual application even though
it's ostensibly open.

I have done the following:

Installed latest X11, latest versions of the affected apps (GIMP, Scribus,
Inkscape)

Tried starting apps under a fresh account.

Anybody seen this? What's causing it?

My first guess would be that you are running X11 in full screen mode.

The X11 icon should be in your dock. Click on it, and then examine
Preferences -> Output.

(If the X11 icon _isn't_ in your dock, then I dont' know how the Gimp
can even be starting up.)

George,

Quick check of the Gimp on my 12" PowerBook... double click the Gimp.
Gimp launches, then X11 (hiding the Gimp menu bar), then a terminal
window appears, then the Gimp windows. The Gimp app is still hanging
around, but its menu bar is not really used. E.g. "Hide Gimp" does
nothing apparent.

So you are looking at the Gimp menu bar, which you don't want. You need
to bring X11 to the foreground, at which time the Gimp windows &
palettes should also appear.

When you just launch X11 by itself, do you get a single
terminal-emulator window? You should. Does X11 go immediately into the
background?? If so, bring it to the foreground, get a terminal with
cmd-N, and then quit (to update its prefs). Maybe that fixes it.

It's not in my dock. Even when Gimp/Inkscape etc. is shown to be running.
But when I download the X11 2006 update, it tells me that this system doesn't
need it. But I can no longer find an application called X11 anywhere on My
HDD, although I can find an app called XDarwin and there are a number of
resource folders called X11. What gives?

I _think_ the point of XDarwin is to run X11 on your mac without
running Aqua (the normal OS X interface) at the same time.

I would prefer to run X11 (which is an optional apple supplied package
on your Tiger install disk(s)) myself, but maybe that is just because
I'm unfamiliar with XDarwin, and unaware of any advantages it offers.

I still suspect the problem may be that XDarwin is running in
full-screen mode, and you just can see it. What happens when (instead
of starting gimp) you double click on the XDarwin icon in your
Applications folder?

Does the XDarwin icon appear in your dock? Can you get to XDarwin
preferences?

If you're running Mac OS X 10.4.x, 'X11' should be located in your
'/Applications/Utilities' folder. Earlier versions of Mac OS X had the
file in the '/Applications' folder.

Ooooooh, bad. XDarwin doesn't run. I'm going to have to pull-out my Tiger
disc and re-install X11, and start over from scratch, I'm afraid. Thanks for
all your help.

Yeah, it would only be in /Applications/Utilities if you had done the
optional install off your Tiger disk.

I wonder where you install gimp from? It might be worth (if there is
an uninstall option) uninstalling it, then installing X11 from the
Tiger disk, then (perhaps) installing gimp.app from this page:

http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/

(Not that I've done this, but that is what I would do if I wanted
gimp.)

I don't know what XDarwin is. On this MBP I have running

/Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11

top also says that I have Xquartz running. I'm not sure where that might
be.

A bientot

Google does. It's an alternate implementation of X11 for the Mac that
existed before Apple's X11.app.

You can find where Xquartz is by typing "which Xquartz". You can find
out what it is by typing "man Xquartz".

Funnily, for once I tried using spotlight, and it reported nothing for
'Xquartz'. Normally I would have used which or find since I have a
HP-UX/Solaris background. Without recourse to the man page, I expect
that Xquartz does the same thing as XSun or Xorg.

A bientot

Is it possible it's simply opening off your physical screen? I've
had occasion where I had to go to Displays Preference and 'find'
apps that have opened on a virtual screen larger than my physical
one
