Office for Mac OS X and Office 2004 don't support Mac OS services. I
don't know about Office 2008 since I haven't bought it.

It doesn't appear to. There are items (including Speech) in the Services
menu that are not grayed out, but the sub-menu of Speech (Start speaking,
Stop speaking) are grayed out. I've using Office 2008 on a G5 running
10.5.2.

isn't there some way in sys ten (10.3) to get any text on my screen to
speak aloud and if so could I use that to get word to speak? >> Stay informed about: Can't get application's text to speak |

It's possible from programs that support Mac OS services. As previously
stated, MS Office does not support Mac OS services. If that's an
important feature for you, you need to use a different program.

I haven't used 10.3, but I think I'd copy and paste the desired text to
Text Edit for reading. >> Stay informed about: Can't get application's text to speak |

Tell Microsoft to get with it and offer a native app. This half-assed
port of a windows product that they're selling today doesn't support
application services.

Microsoft Office applications *are* native applications. They are simply
Carbon-based rather than Cocoa-based. Apple choses not to implement
application services for Carbon-based applications. So one could argue
that Apple should "get with it" and provide application service support
to Carbon applications.

He already knows it works from TextEdit but not from Word, and he's
already been told that Office doesn't support services.

No, they were native apps on OS 9. Today, they're out-of-date ports,
as evidenced by their failure to implement applications services.

In Mac OS X software development, "native" means the binary code is in a
format that runs natively (without emulation) on the platform. Office
2008 applications do indeed run natively on both PowerPC- and
Intel-based Macs.
