Word up peeps,

A while ago I would never bother with backups. But hearing Adam
Christianson go on and on and on and on (and on..) I decided to clone
my HDD using SuperDuper every now and then.

But now I often hear people saying 'You only have 1 backup!??!'. Like,
omg, how many backups do you need, rite?

You have to draw the line somewhere.

Your info isn't that critical. You maybe have a few gigs of ultra-
critical data. in which case you can also back that up online, bitch.

You can't be too rich or too thin, and you can't have too many
backups..

If the data is critical, I like two backups, and I'll do three if it
is convenient. So say one to removable media, one to some network
resource, and one to something out on the internet (assuming that can
reasonably be done).

There is one more kind of backup - vital for cases when your hardware
goes down - and that's duplicating what you need on a working
computer. Many vital services are set up to switch data centers at
a moment's notice.

Personal computers aren't well set up for this - too much software is
tied into the particular computer's set-up. But I'd love to
automatically synchronize between a lap-top and a desktop computer -
even to the extent of having high scores in a game (well, since I'm
not much of a gamer - play counts in my iTunes).

Apple could do well in beating Microsoft in the marketplace to gain
customers' confidence in such a system.

Of course, we still need Time Machine ability to recover deleted data.

The best way is to do it automatically after midnigt,
and let suprduper do the shutdown for you.
(you paid, didn't you? or your name is Pappalardo?)

There is something to be said
for having a SD clone against hardware failure
-and- time machine against your own stupidity,

Thread merge warning!

iMac's Backup does some of this neatly. I get it to do backups of our
laptops to my Pro every night and then the Pro backs stuff up to an
external disk.
I wish I could get wake on LAN to work properly though. It is a pain
waking up the missus' machine for a couple of minutes each night.

Which leads to another form of backup.
Off Site
To guard against fire and burglary, I make encrypted archives of stuff
I really want to keep and get a friend to hold 'em at his place. I do
the same for him.
Encryption means we don't need to be too paranoid about losing each
other's DVDs.
