Any word on whether people would have to purchase a fat binary of Mac
OS X server when it comes out, or if they'll upgrade existing
users (of 10.4) for free?

You would only need to buy a fat binary version if you were planning on
running it on an Intel based Mac. Since low end versions of Intel Macs
are not expected until at least a year from now, and those will not be
the kind of machines you would run a server on, I don't expect a release
of OS X Server for them. The larger towers and servers are not expected
until 2007, by then 10.5 should be out. And like previous releases, I
expect that will be a paid upgrade.
