I am looking to to replace the ATI Rage 128 Pro (16 MB) card that came
with my G4/400 - AGP with a newer faster card. The card I have in mind
is the "Sapphire Radeon 9000 AGP 128MB DDR 2D/3D TV out" that comes with
128 MB of memory and retails for about $80.00

Is this a good card? Will it work with OS X (10.2.6)?

Thanks,
Bev

P.S. If it matters, my system is a G4/400 upgraded to a Sonnettech 1Ghz
G4 CPU, with 1.36 GB of RAM.

As far as optimum performance of the Radeon is concerned, there might be
a bottleneck in the AGP bus. Yours is probably 1x or 2x, while the
Radeon will work up to 4x. As I understand it, they are
backwards-compatible--so it will work--but it won't be as fast as it
would be in a newer G4 with the 4x AGP.

(first of all, I feel like a nimrod because I JUST posted an identical
question to this same newsgroup... duh)

I would be VERY wary of buying this Sapphire card - Macs tend to only
work with cards specifically manufactured FOR Macs.

Can anybody check me on this?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

It is supposed to work with Macs. But I haven't read any reviews. Hence
my original post. Here's the link that shows it works with Macs.

While that DOES sound good, I'd make a specific point of contacting the
manufacturer and asking them outright (www.sapphiretech.com) - note that
that site is the only one that mentions Mac compatibility - all the
others I've found don't.

I'm not sure I'd trust Macworld (I know that sounds ridiculous, but...)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

The only official Mac compatible ATI cards are those manufactured by ATI
for Macs, whether they're OEM or Retail models. Some people have
purchased specific model PC Radeon 8500s and flashed them for Mac use.
However, ATI views this as software piracy and will not support users
who flash PC cards for use in Macs. If you want full support from ATI
you'll have to get one of the official Mac Radeon cards, whether it's a
Radeon 8500 or Radeon 9000.

Since your system was originally a G4 400 it most likely doesn't have
support for the ADC port on a Radeon 9000 so the 8500 is a better buy as
you'll get DVI, VGA, and SVideo out (only upt to two outputs can be used
at any time).

Oh, the first AGP ports in Macs were 2xAGP. The difference between
2xAGP and 4xAGP isn't that big in real world use.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
