Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>printing (more info?)

Greetings!

Someone has offered me a working Apple Laserwriter 4/600PS free. I could
use it for a remote office with a 350 MHz iMac running OS X 10.2.8 which
has only inconvenient shared printing to a couple of much newer and I
guess better HP printers quite some distance away. The idea is that that
office could regularly print to the 4/600, but use the networked HP
printers for anything that required the sharpest quality output
(camera-ready copy, if they ever do any, that sort of thing).

So what are my options for connecting this printer? I can think of two:
a USB to serial adapter, such as made by Keystone, or some sort of
serial-ethernet box in order to put this on the AppleTalk network (there
is a hub in that office with an extra port).

Any suggestions as to which procedure is better (= some combination of
more economical and more reliable).

Thanks in advance for any informed comments!

Can that printer be connected directly via serial? I lost my docs for
that printer long ago so I don't know - but I do know that earlier
printers could connect either via serial or AppleTalk.

I bought a Farallon AppleTalk<->Ethernet bridge quite a few years ago.
It was $99 but I've seen them on eBay for half that. It was a great
investment. Just plug it in and use it. No configuration and no fuss.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
