Sorry to ask a question that I'm sure has been answered zillions of times,
but...

I just bought a Windows laptop running XP Professional. My Macs are running
Panther. How do I access the Windows machine from the Mac? The Help files
are totally Greek to me. As the owner of the Windows machine I can
presumably configure it in any way I like, but what is that way? Can
somebody give me a simple step by step on both machines? Many thanks!

the subject line should say: connect Mac to Windows - I changed it.

Here are directions for Mac OS X to XP Home - your mileage may vary...

other keywords: file share sharing directions network

Use a > crossover < ethernet connecting cable between your Mac and the
PC.

Fire the PC up first.

Make sure all the stuff you want to get to is in a folder - then make
sure that you have designated that folder to be shared.

Put everything you want to share in the "Shared Documents" folder (make
sure it's DIRECTLY inside your C drive and that you have sharing turned
on by right button clicking on the "Shared Documents" folder >
"Properties" and turn on sharing - note the shared name for this folder
in the Properties windows is really "SharedDocs"

Fire up your Mac. Wait til you get to the desktop, etc.

===> the "you're lucky it's this easy" way:

On the Mac:

if things are set up in "Automatic" mode with the following happening:

upper left Apple Menu -the Apple icon- > System Prefernces -highlight
and release- > Network

Network window

Location: Automatic

Show: Network Status w (down below) Built-in Ethernet -not Modem or
Airport- using an IP address near identical (except for the last number)
to the XP IP address (you will find that out below) this should be
easy...

otherwise, you can try this in the Network window:

Show: select Built-In Ethernet

Select TCP/IP > Configure using DHCP - hit Apply Now if you can - this
also should be easy.

On the PC:

Start > Command Prompt > you'll get a black window

type:

ipconfig

hit Enter key

copy the IP number and Subnet Mask number down.

Close / exit that window on the PC.

On the Mac:

click a middle area of your desktop - you should be in Finder (upper
left next to Apple icon should say Finder)

(top) Menu Bar > Go > Connect to Server (apple K is the shortcut)

type:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="smb://WindowsXPIPAddress/SharedDocs" target="_blank">smb://WindowsXPIPAddress/SharedDocs</a>

"WindowsXPIPAddress" is that dotted quad IP number you got in the black
window on the PC

"SharedDocs" is the "Properties" name of the folder you selected to
share on the PC - it's not necessarily the name you see in an Explorer
window

for example:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="smb://169.254.52.101/SharedDocs" target="_blank">smb://169.254.52.101/SharedDocs</a>

hit Connect

you will be prompted to type in the Windows' User's Name's password on
your Mac's screen

DONE!!!

===> the "this will require a little more work, but boy, I'll look like
a genius" way:

On the Mac:

Upper Left: Apple Menu (the Apple icon)

go to System Preferences - release

select Network

Location: select New Location from top drop down bar

Make a new location like "Connect to PC"

hit OK

Show: select Network Port Configurations - kill off everything except
Ethernet - hit Apply Now

On the PC:

Start > Command Prompt > you'll get a black window

type:

ipconfig

hit Enter key

copy the IP number and Subnet Mask number down.

Close / exit that window on the PC.

or, if you can't make that happen:

On the PC:

go to Start

Network Connections

View status of the connection

Select Support tab

copy the IP number and Subnet Mask number down. Close / exit that window

On the Mac:

Network window should still be open

Show: choose Ethernet

Configure: Manually

IP Address: same address as XP (above) EXCEPT last number is DIFFERENT

Subnet Mask: same as Windows Subnet Mask number

PPPoE, AppleTalk, menu blank and unchecked - Proxies: Use Passive FTP
Mode CHECKED

hit Apply Now

close up the window (upper left dot or apple W - the shortcut for close
Window)

click middle area of your desktop - you should be in Finder (upper left
next to Apple icon should say Finder)

(top) Menu Bar > Go > Connect to Server (apple K is the shortcut)

type:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="smb://WindowsXPIPAddress/SharedDocs" target="_blank">smb://WindowsXPIPAddress/SharedDocs</a>

"WindowsXPIPAddress" is that dotted quad IP number you got in the black
window on the PC

"SharedDocs" is the "Properties" name of the folder you selected to
share on the PC - it's not necessarily the name you see in an Explorer
window

for example:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="smb://169.254.52.101/SharedDocs" target="_blank">smb://169.254.52.101/SharedDocs</a>

hit Connect

you will be prompted to type in the Windows' User's Name's password

DONE!!!

I should like to share files on my Windows 95 PC with my newly acquired
iBook with Macos X 10.3 - does the Peabody advice apply on W95 also?

My iBook getting started book says I don't need an Ethernet crossover
cable to connect to other Ethernet devices - do I? If I don't need an
ethernet crossover cable then what do I need?

The Ethernet cable coming out of the PC is a hangover from its early
life connecting to a LAN in a University - its other end physically
plugs into the iBook, but before attempting setting up a connection I
should like to know if I have any chance of success? How can I determine
whether this cable is a crossover cable, if I need to know this?

Any constructive suggestions would be welcome.

If only. I have a wireless network (original graphite base station)
with two PowerBooks (10.3.3) and two Windows portables (XP Pro). All
four computers have file sharing turned on but the only two that can
access each other are the two PowerBooks. Any/all attempts to either
browse to or directly connect to the Windows machines using <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="smb://" target="_blank">smb://</a>
addresses fail. I get login dialogs but all username and password
combinations fail, even though we're 100% sure they are correct.

Browsing is the more frustrating failure because it lets you see the
Windows machines, but when you try to log in it claims that the PCs
"cannot be found". What? You just found them 10 seconds ago when
browsing but now suddenly you say they're gone? Right.

The Terminal command "nmblookup" succeeds on all PC's. Example:

$ nmblookup -A 10.0.1.3
Looking up status of 10.0.1.3
KADIKOY <00> - M <ACTIVE>
WORKGROUP <00> - <GROUP> M <ACTIVE>
KADIKOY <20> - M <ACTIVE>
WORKGROUP <1e> - <GROUP> M <ACTIVE>
WORKGROUP <1d> - M <ACTIVE>
..__MSBROWSE__. <01> - <GROUP> M <ACTIVE>

Yet the Panther browser fails to connect?

Windows is a fact of life. Apple needs to fix Panther connectivity to
Windows computers or its market share will continue to dip. :-(

you'll need a crossover cable. another option is to get a router, then
you don't need the crossover.

the cable you're using now, is NOT a crossover cable.

Newer Macs can detect what sort of cable you're using can configure
their ethernet ports appropriately, so there's no need for a crossover
cable.
