I connected my mac to a netopia router (I think it's a router) via my
ethernet and I get the IP Address, Subnet mask, and Router address in
the TCP/IP control panel, but it's like I'm not connected. Nothing
connects, e.g, can't get any web pages to load and can't get the time
from the network time server when I go to the date and time control
panel and try to "set time now."

Is there anything else I should know about to get this to work? The
other 3 ports are used for PCs that aren't mine.

Thanks for your input and advice.

How is the connection supposed to be setup? Dynamic or static IP?
What's the gateway IP address? Domain name?

If you have a static IP address, that you enter. If you using DHCP, you
specify the default router (gateway) assigns you an IP address.

There are some basic tools you need to diagnose network
connectivity--whatroute and MacPing. Both these are in Interarchie if
you already own that. Otherwise you'll have to download them.

When I had DSL, I had to connect through pppoe, but it was on MacOS X.
Your DSL provider should give you this tool for 8.6, if they support it.
You might try MacPoET:

It's static
I have the IP address, don't know about the "gateway IP address"
the domain is... what is sbc's domain? is it sbc.yahoo.com?
As I said, I get the IP Address, Subnet mask, and Router address in

Will try to analyse it more with OT Tool and EtherPeek. Maybe TechTool
if I can instal it on the powerbook.
Any other help is appreciated.

You need to know the gateway or default route address. This is the
address of the router or gateway which will do all "off-system" DNS
resolution. There's DNS lookup on your system, then if it's not found,
it goes to this system. If you don't provide it, DNS won't work, which
is what you're seeing.

Contact SBC for what to put in that field and what to specify for domain
name.

Has your netopia router logged into your DSL account and setup a PPPoE
connection? If not, then either you need to make sure your router does
that for you, get a new router that will do that for you, or get
software for your Mac OS 8.6 system that understands how to talk PPPoE
(personally, I like letting the router log into the ISP, it means I can
keep my connection always on, and not worry about it on my Mac; it also
means I can attach multiple computers to the internet without any extra
effort).

If your netopia device is not a router, then I would check
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://dealmac.com" target="_blank">http://dealmac.com</a> and find an inexpensive router.

That usually means you did not tell the router your DSL username and password,
and tell the router to talk to the DSL modem using PPPoE.

When you buy a router and plug it in, it is set up for cable modem. In order
for a router to work with DSL, you have to configure the router.

Look at the manual for the router. in most cases, you can configure a router by
opening a browser and surfing to a special address, usually

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://192.168.1.1" target="_blank">http://192.168.1.1</a>

but sometimes slightly different. You will see a router configuration page. It
will ask you how the router is supposed to talk to the modem. By default, it's
probably set to DHCP.

With a DSL modem, you have to tell the router to talk to the modem using PPPoE.
You must then tell the router your DSL username and password, which your DSL
subscriber company gave you.

Hope that helps!
