Sorry, but I am new to mac

in windows, I would go to start, run and type

//192.168.0.24/share

I heard this was the "unversal naming convention" will it work on mac?

and I cant seem to find "run"

I have admin rights on the mac I want to connect to, and I can enable
anything I need to.

we are on 100 mbps LAN using CAT5e to connect the two macs (thru the
switch)

both macs can get to the net, so I know TCPIP is working fine,

First, turn on file sharing. Click on the apple menu at the top left,
go to system preferences, and click on Sharing. When you check File
Sharing, the afp:// address will be displayed. From the other
computer, you can press Command-K and enter this address to view the
folders you shared.

And if you are using Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, it's even easier. Computers
on your LAN that have file sharing enabled will show up in the sidebar of
your Finder windows, and you can click to connect without having to type
in the address.

I don't think this would work. It would be \\192.168.0.24\....

> I heard this was the "unversal naming convention" will it work on mac?

The naming with the numbers is universal, this is a TCP/IP address, and
all computers on the net use this method.

If you refer to the syntax - it is different depending on the operating
system. The Mac OS X is basically Unix BSD, so you may be able to use
the unix syntax in the terminal application. However, I myself would use
(in the Finder) Command-K and then type the IP-address in the dialog
box.

> and I cant seem to find "run"

Why should you? Open the Terminal application (in the Applications /
Utilities folder) and enter there any commands you wish to.

Yes, and are you new to Google? When will Google posters actually learn
to use Google?

Google, "mac connect to mac over lan" (just like your subject heading).
The first link will guide you through what you need. Just in case you
don't know Google, here's the link:

I'm not familiar with Leopard yet (just upgraded to Tiger) but I
am sort of familiar with what the OP was asking. How does leopard
handle it when there are 300-400 computers on the LAN? It
wouldn't try to put them all on the sidebar would it?

Normally on most systems you have the ability to explicitly mount
a server or shared volume to differentiate it from all of the
others that may be out there that you aren't interested in.

But it's so much more pleasant to interact with real helpful people and
ask on usenet.

In that case, you would deselect show Bonjour Servers in the Finder's
preference pane and use the "Connect to Server" item in the Go To menu

Yes, of course. It's just ironic that all these google-groupers don't
even bother with google. Then come here for help if they have trouble.

Yes it's a shame that commercial imperatives are allowed to compromise
the better features of the internet, and that most people go along with
it willingly rather than expend a bit of effort to learn about the tools
themselves. DejaNews was originally a very good addition to the
internet, and it could still be if google would 'do no evil'.
