Hello,
I hope this is on-topic for this group... I am a web designer, and have
just bought a Mac so that I can test my sites on Mac browsers. I have
OSX 10.2, which has IE5.2 and Safari 1.0 (v85). Do people here use any
other browsers? If so, what? I would like to get as many as are being
used so I can test in all. Please also let me know if any are obsolete.
TIA >> Stay informed about: What browsers are you using? |

After you get a large set of browsers, also get one of the utilities to
turn on the Debug menu in Safari. In particular the choice "Open Page
With ..." in that menu lets you view your page in other browsers.
Mine shows: camino, firefox, IE, mozilla, netscape, omniweb, opera. >> Stay informed about: What browsers are you using? |

Using 10.4.6 I use Firefox and SeaMonkey. Camino, Mozilla 1.7.13 and
Safari are also on the machine (mostly for testing purposes) >> Stay informed about: What browsers are you using? |

I use Safari (2.0.3), Camino and Firefox - in that order.

I recommend Macs to my friends, and Windows machines
to those whom I don't mind billing by the hour >> Stay informed about: What browsers are you using? |

Don't worry, I only write 100% valid (X)HTML and CSS. I have enough to
do without shooting myself in the foot as well<g>

Probably, but it's a good start. The CSS newsgroups are almost
exclusively frequented by people who have the sense not to use IE, but
most of them realise that IE is dominant, so you can't pretend it's not
there (much as we'd like to!!)

OK, Safari and FF I have. I already test Opera on Windows, so is there
any point in testing it on the MAc as well? Surely a decent browser
like that will render the same on both platforms? Or am I being too
optimistic?
iCab and lynx/links.
Ta for those
(I'm ignoring OmniWeb, Camino,

Understood.

I imagine many will until they upgrade their machines, some even after
that. For the same reason, you still get a reasonable number of WIndows
users with IE5. It came on their PC and they haven't upgraded (they
don't know how to do, much less why they should). They will carry on
using it until the machine dies and they get a new one with a newer
version. With the Mac, users of older machines don't even have the
option of Safari as it needs OSX.2, which many will not have. >> Stay informed about: What browsers are you using? |

No reason, other than it takes slightly longer for every browser you
need to check ;-)

I agree 100% with this. I really try to avoid using hacks wherever
posssible as I feel it's a very fragile way to build a page. What if a
future version of a browser supports the feature that you rely on to
hide code, but doesn't support the feature you are hiding? You end up
in a mess. I think a lot of people are going to be very busy when IE7
comes out, as the betas suggest that they have fixed a lot of the
parsing errors and have removed the mysterious DOM node above HTML
(although there's still debate about that one). Loads of hacks rely on
those to hide CSS from IE. Given that IE will now see that CSS, but may
not fully support all the CSS it is now seeing, there are going to be
problems.
I'm glad to say that none of my sites seem to be affected as I have
carefully avoided using hacks.
Anyway, thanks for the reply. >> Stay informed about: What browsers are you using? |

For a start you won't be able to run the latest versions of many
browsers on old 10.2. Oh, and Mac IE is dead. No one uses it anymore.
As for me, I use iCab, Camino and Shiira.

I beg to differ, but my server logs show people still using IE on the
Mac. Sure the numbers aren't huge, but there are easily more than are
using iCab and Camino put together.

Never heard of that last one, but as it requires OSX 10.3 and I only
have 10.2, I guess I won't be able to test it anyway!!
