I have it set up now at never for the system and the HDD when possible
is checked.

Not quite certain what the difference is between having the system shut
down and checking the hard drive to shut down. Wouldn't shutting down
the system also shut down the hard drive regardless of whether the check
box was checked or not?
Is there an advantage one way or the other?

You can choose the Login Window from the Fast User Switch menu item.

Not automatically after a specified amount of idle time, you can't. ; )

There is also wear on the cold bearings in the accelerating
forces of start up. You are right that there are competing issues
but I think it should be clear that 14 minutes is an absurdly
short period to force the issue.

Absolutely. I wouldn't suggest anything shorter than, say, 45 minutes
to an hour, personally, but to each his own, I suppose.

This is what I have in my Energy Saver prefs:

Put the computer to sleep.... Never

(I don't say it would be silly not to follow me on this. If you
have relatives that you want to bequeath the machine to and you
die and no one finds you for a few years (there have been some
terrible cases of this and worse in Sydney lately) then it would
be best for the machine to have shut down after a fair time. Not
minutes!)

Put the display to sleep.... 14 minutes (like you)

I have Restart after a power failure unticked.

(For a simple reason really. If it ever happens (almost never), I
like to have a quiet period undistracted by problems with the
computer that can result, where I write a letter to the power
company with language so foul that H-Block prisoners would blush).

I have a screensaver come on after 5 min (I have multiple 'not so
cheap' LCD screens). Under Desktop and Screensaver System Prefs.
There is no clash between Sleep and Screensaver and I recommend
you do use this latter.

Fair enough, I would advise a much longer period though. In fact
I would advise a period that screams out, "bugger this, my owner
has gone to bed for the night or pissed off for the weekend or
gotten arrested"

That really depends on how often you use your computer, though, right?
For me, if I'm away for 45 minutes, I'll probably be away for *at least*
2 hours, and maybe the rest of the evening.

After a while, if one studies oneself, one gets to know the
habits of this curious creature and can act accordingly. The
computer cannot study the habits of people easily, too much
subtle background material to master.

if you can't decide between JR's very small setting for sleep
(though longer than your original) and my inclinations, do a
simple log of yourself. Really! How often do you go away from
your machine and come back to use it after it goes to sleep? If
quite often, I would increase the time accordingly. Use
commonsense, if you don't want to leave it onall night or when
you are away for a day, fine, set accordingly (or just swithch it
off).

HD's are designed to spin for thousands and thousands of hours.

applications you have running stay running, but the console displays the
login screen. He'd like to be able to make the computer do that after a
certain amount of idle time.
