Can't download Firefox on my Mac

I have downloaded other software from the internet, but Firefox is
sometimes coming in on download as an download.mozilla.org excel
file?!? Totally flummoxed. I'm new to Macs, though, so I might be doing
something fundamentally wrong. I'm saving the file to the desktop. Any
thoughts?

Kind of lost me. But I know that I am downloading the Mac version. As
for assigning files, how do I check file settings to assign them?

Are you downloading the mac version? It comes as a zipped dmg file
Check your file settings to esnure you havent assigned zip (stuffit)
files to Excel, or dmg files to excel.
Stuffit (zip) files should be assigned to Stuffit (Lite/Delux/etc)
Dmg files should not be assigned to any specific program (they should
invoke the systems built in mounting utility)

What are you downloading it with?

On my OS 10.3.7 PB, Files downloaded from the web to the desktop
frequently have an odd filename & extension during the download. ".xls"
seems to be a particularly common extension. The odd filename will
remain until I click on the downloaded file icon at which time it
instantly changes to the "correct" name and extension. This behavior
seems a bit odd but it has never effected my ability to open, mount or
decompress whatever file was downloaded.

Known problem on the Mac. Only happens when downloading with Firefox,
and only in certain cases. Search the forums on Mozillazine for
information.

One workaround is to download with Safari. I believe that just renaming
the file to .dmg also works. However, since the problem has never
happened to me, I don't know much about it.
