I am running 10.4.11 on a MacBook Pro with the latest Airport updates.
When we get a hit on the power line I lose my wireless connection while
the modem and router reboot. However, once they are up I can not
re-establish the connection. I have tried turning Airport off and back
on but that doesn't work. The only cure is to restart the computer.
Once restarted the connection is reestablished. This tells me there is
something getting set or unset in the wireless driver that is not
resetting properly. Is there a better (faster) solution than restarting
the computer?

Not the answer you were looking for, but might I suggest a UPS for
your comm gear?

At home I have my DSL modem, Airport Extreme base station, as well
as the base unit for my cordless telephone attached to an
Uninterruptible Power Supply. It works wonders during power
interruptions, as well as providing my comm gear with surge
protection.

I know this is not what you are asking, but if you watch the
specials on dealmac.com you can pick up small UPS for $20 - $30
and save a lot of headaches.

That is an excellent suggestion and I may do that. It is something I
never thought of.

However, I still would like to know if there is an easy way to reset
Airport without having to restart the computer.

When I have had Airport issues, I've turn off Airport, and then
turned it back on.

I actually have a Network location I named "Off-Line". This
Location has all the networking interfaces disabled.

I then switch my location to the "Off-Line" setting, which kills
all networking, then I switch back to my normal network location
(either my Home location, or my Work location), and I initiate a
new connection to the net.

You can also use the Airport menu bar icon and select "Turn
Airport Off", and then "Turn Airport On". I find that my custom
"Off-Line" location is useful for a few other cases where I do not
want to have network access via any means, so it is useful to me.

And I didn't even remember this trick until tonight, otherwise I
would have mentioned it yesterday.

I've tried this and it doesn't work in the situation where my modem and
router have rebooted because of a hit on the line.

This sounds like a good possibility. How did you set it up? I will
give it a try until I get around to tracking down a UPS.

Mac OS X 10.4.11
o Network system preferences
o Location Popup menu at the top of the panel
o Select New Location... and give your it a name such as "Offline"
o Show Popup menu just under location at the top of panel
o Select Network Port Configurations
o Uncheck ALL the entries. This will disable all network
interfaces while using this location.
o Click on Apply Now
o On Mac OS X 10.4, you can use the blue Apple menu to quickly
switch between network locations.

Mac OS X 10.5
o Network system preferences
o Location Popup menu at the top of the panel
o Edit Locations...
o Click on + (plus) sign
o Give your new location a name such as "Offline", and then click
"Done".
o On the left will be a list of all your network interfaces
o- One at a time, select each interface
o- Click on the gear next to the + and - at the bottom of the
list panel
o- Select Make Service Inactive
o Click on Apply
o On Mac OS X 10.5, you can use the gray Apple menu to quickly
switch between network locations.

NOTE: If you click on Apply after creating this Offline location,
and you happen to be doing this via VNC, Back to my Mac, or other
remote access method, you will immediately loose network access
with your remote system. I know, I just did this to my Leopard
system which I was accessing via Chicken of the VNC from my Tiger
system :-)

Done. Now we'll see how it works if I take a hit on the power line
again.
