Outlook Needs an exchange server?

This may be a dumb question but does outlook for mac require an exchange
server? I am currently using outlook on my PC without an exchange server
but would like to use the Mac laptop to check emails. No other email
program seems to have the advanced message rules that a required to run my
business.
