When filevault is turned on excel files will not open I get this error:
the file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. or, the server the document is stored on may not be
I installed 10.4 on a 1.25 ghz dual G4. Office 2004 for Mac. If I turn off file vault or move the file out of the sparseimage with file vault on the file will open. I fixed permsissions with disk util and it did not help.

Leopard and Office 2008 has the same problem... "cannot open the type" within the file vault image. This either run file vault useless, as I have to move the file outside of file vault image to work on a document and remember to put it back once done.

I am about to copy office 2008 to my application folder within the file vault image to see if that fixes the issue.

From where I stand right now, office canNOT be used in a governmental agency or contractors.
