It has been years since I've inserted a floppy disk, but the sound of
writing (and I think reading) is unforgettable. It's like the sound
that says there's a ring signal after you dial somebody's phone number.
I don't know whether to call it a buzzing, a chattering, or a
clicking.
I heard that sound for two seconds yesterday. Two feet from my ear, my
Mac Mini sits on a Ministack Firewire disk, and a DSL modem sits on my
Mini. I was sure the sound came from there. Normally, all I hear from
that equipment are the startup chime and fan noise.
My computer was idle, but a few seconds later the Software Update icon
began hopping to tell me an update was available.
I was afraid my disk was failing, but I haven't found any other evidence
of trouble. Three feet behind the computer is a phone on the wall. For
some reason, the speaker pops once every couple of minutes. I suppose
what I heard could have been a series of pops from the phone. In that
case, it's the only time I ever heard it make more than one pop.
Naturally I'm uneasy about the prospect of a sudden disk failure. What
could the sound mean?
