I use cdrdao and I deal with this as follows: start the app first,
_then_ insert the cd. If there's no disk in the drive when cdrdao
starts, it probes for a minute or so before it gives up -- plenty of
time to insert one.

Same with using cdrdao for writing: start it, then insert the blank.

I don't know whether cdparanoia will keep checking in the way cdrdao
does. If not, I suggest you switch to cdrdao, which is a wonderful
tool all around, and uses the same paranoia technology during read.
