Thanks, Michelle. I found it!

Both. The Apple Remote can be used on either.

I received an Apple IR remote with my new iMac7,1
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz computer last October.

I don't believe any model iPod has an IR receiver.

The iPod Universal Dock comes with the IR remote.
Third item down on the right side...

Any ipod that is connected to the Apple Universal iPod dock:

My iPod Photo came with the remote and the dock that accompanied it has
an IR receptor. I believe that the iPod has to be docked for the remote
to be used; however, I used it (only twice) to play slideshows when the
iPod was connected to a TV.

According to Apple's web pages, the remote can be used with at least a
few other docked iPod models.

No worries. Subject lines in here are rarely changed to reflect the
content.

Same. I don't even know where the two of them I have are at the
moment, and don't care. Pretty worthless, imo.

Worthless to some, useful to others -- pretty typical of a lot of
hardware/software features.

I find them useful on my Macs that have EyeTV units attached because
they're handy in using the computer as a part of my home entertainment
setup. If you don't use FrontRow, EyeTV, or some similar feature, then
they are relatively useless. Also useful for the two occasions that I
docked my iPod and did slideshows from it on a TV.

I have had to number/color-code them, though, to keep track of which
one goes with which computer/device.

I might be the odd duck, though, as three of my Macs have BlueTooth and
I've never used it (other than to see it worked with some loaner
equipment for books on which I was working). I don't think BlueTooth is
"worthless" -- just a feature that other people use and I don't.

Yes. But my comment was intended as a serious answer to the (implied)
question of why Apple stopped shipping the remore with the computer. I
wasn't sniping about the remote or saying that it was inherently useless
- just that it was useless to some customers such as myself. That it
could be useful to others I accept.

When something ise useful to some customers, but useless to others, that
can be a very good reason to make it a separate option as opposed to
shipping it to all of them. That's particularly so when it is a separate
piece of hardware like this.

Of course, it depends on the relative numbers involved; something useful
to 95% of the customers, you might about as well ship to them all. And
there are a bunch of other factors involved in such a decision. You can
even, if you want to, throw in desire to gouge more money out of
customers, balanced against annoying them. I'll not speculate on flamish
matters like that. I'll look for more "objective" (not quite the right
word, but I struggled for a better one) reasons before assuming such
base ones. I would have to assume that the fact that a significant
fraction of the customers might not get any use out of it would be one
of the basic factors.
