Hi Folks:
I've posted in the past about the video not coming up sometimes.
I've narrowed it down to a temperature issue. Anyway, for a few
months I've been just letting the computer sleep instead of shutting
down. This has been working until a few days ago (a little cooler
now). Now when it awakes, there are bars and lines all over the
display (20" flat panel). When it does this, the computer is
nonresponsive and I have to hold the power button to turn it off. When
restarting, I just get the black screen, but I can shut it down with
CNTL-OPT-APPLE-EJECT. If I let it warm up a while before this, it
will work on restart.
I pulled the video card, cleaned the contacts, reset PRAM, NVRAM,
etc. It still does it when cold. I was looking into a ATI X800 card
and see they have problems as well!
My question: Is there ANY brand or type of video card that is
relaible in this G5 dual 2GHz?
Thanks!

That's not been my experience at all. I have used both the cards you
mention without issue in either of my dual 2 GHz G5 towers. Both are
very reliable.
I'm currently using the x800 in my G5 - it's been installed since 2005,
and it's a great card. My wife's G5 came with the Radeon 9600, which
worked just fine for a long time until I transferred the Radeon 9800
that came with my G5 into her machine as part of my x800 upgrade. The
9800 has been functioning perfectly as well in her machine.
One things I've made sure to do is keep the absolute latest ATI firmware
and software installed on both machines. Maybe yours is lagging behind?
Apple's System Profiler will tell you the firmware version on your card.
Look under Graphics/Displays for "ROM Revision". Here's what mine says:
ATI Radeon X800 XT:
Chipset Model: ATY,R420
Type: Display
Bus: AGP
Slot: SLOT-1
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x4a48
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-A35801-109
Another possibility: If the ambient temperature in your office is
relatively high (say, in the 80s), you may be overheating your video
cards. (I think you would know, though, because the fans in your G5
would probably be running at an abnormally-high speed as well.) In that
case, one thing you might try is scaling back (reducing) the processor /
memory speed of your video card from the default frequencies. Slower
speeds will result in less heat generation (but also slower
performance). You can do adjust this with ATIccelerator:
<http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15849>
Read the documentation that comes with this software carefully and use
common sense. Extreme settings can potentially damage your card, so make
*small*, incremental changes, testing each time. Just don't go nuts and
make huge changes in frequency, and you'll be fine.
XLR8 Your Mac <http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/video.html> has plenty of data
(actual results) about setting the clock frequency of various Mac video
cards - so you can use that as a guide.

Hi JR:
Thanks for the reply. I currently have a bid in for the x800, but I
was afterward looking through the newsgroups and found alot of posting
about some kind of noise on the edges of lines or something. Someone
else said at lower reolutions this goes away.
I use my 9600 with the 20" Apple LCD that gets all its power through
the card. The times I have starting are the cooler days. It's never
very hot in here.
I don't remember ever doing a firmware update to the video card. It's
the original card running since 2003 or so. I'll try that
aticellerator. I keep the brightness almost all the way down and the
speed is fine. I'd slow down the refresh if I can. I'll fire it up
and get the rev.
Ahh! it came up from sleep that time! It's a warm day today.
ROM Revision 113-A13601-126
OK. I'm going to try that ATI stuff
Thanks!

Hi JR: Thanks for the reply
I ran that ATIcellerator on the card. This is interesting! I first
went to slow the processor down. I see how the 'default' button
highlights once you make a change, so one only needs to hit return to
go back (providing the processor didn't crash I guess). fro it's
defauly of 375MHz or something, I slowed it down to about 34MHZ before
the screen started getting wacky. I bumped it up a little and it
quickly cleared. So, I doubled that speed. I let it sit at 66MHz for a
while. I noticed some flashing 'curtains' when moving windows, so I
again bumped it up to 101MHz. What ever this 'processor speed' does,
it doesn't effect the benchmark much at all. Then I started slowing
down the memory speed. I didn't get too far when I noticed artifacs
all over the screen. Then I started speeding up the ram speed. It
didn't clear up until I went to about 125% of the original! So, I
left it there. Once so far, it has awaken from sleep with artifacts
all over the screen, but I could still do things. The mouse would draw
a curtain down from the top when I moved to the top and went down,
then this curtain would go up when I moved the mouse up. Still,
artifacts all over. I shut down and restarted and it was fine.
A question about your x800 if I may. When you lower the resolution
(I'm supposing you can), does your screen/display seem to dither the
characters so they're all fuzzy? (smoothing) This card/monitor does
this, but I think the card it doing it. I have fuzzy site already, I
don't need more. At the monitors native resolution, 1680X1050, the
dithering is gone, but small characters. I wish I could get a card
that doesn't do this.
Thanks!

All LCD displays have a native resolution, where everything is crisp,
and multiple non-native resolutions, where everything is scaled and
relatively blurry. This isn't a function of the video card, but the
display itself. It's best to run LCD displays at their native resolution.
