Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>programmer>misc (more info?)

I seem to remember being impressed with the ProjectBuilder's ability to
find the latest Java documentation on Sun's web site. Maybe it was the
first XCode. In any case, I haven't used XCode for a while, and after
the Feb 6 RefLib update, the Java documentation lookup no longer works
properly.

Currently, the only item in XCode's documentation preferences is the
Apple web site. When I use "Find in API" for a java class, there are no
matches unless the name exists in C or ObjC. When I use "Find in
Documentation", I only get references to Java 1.3.1. I am using the
latest XCode 2.4.1.

The installation of the Feb 6 RefLib chomped up a bunch of CPU time
building the Java index. How do I get this index into the XCode
documentation preferences (like, where is it)? I tried to force XCode
to find and use the local index by de-selecting the Apple site in
Preferences. After that, "Find in API" still couldn't match Java
classes. Trying "Find in Documentation" gave the same 1.3.1 links, but
they couldn't be opened because "No extended documentation location is
active".

What will it take to get XCode to find Java 2 links for "Find in API"?

Thanks

It seems like this isn't exactly a hot topic. Is everyone using
something other than XCode (maybe Eclipse?) for Java on OSX? Or am I
just stupid because I need to look things up in the manuals?

I'm convinced the Feb. 06 update was flawed. After installing the Apr
11 update, things worked much better. Yet no Java 1.5 stuff. For that,
I had to go to Apple's site and find the 1.5 documentation supplement
for installation on my own system.

If I turn off the documentation preferences pointing to my own system,
the links to Apple's online documentation still refers to Java 1.3.1.
Apple does have documentation for 1.4.2 and 1.5 online, just not at the
address in XCode preferences. Is it possible to modify a web reference?

Thanks
