I have a 9 page Word X file which consists of quite a complicated table I use for planning trips.

It was created in Word X and when opened in X there are no problems. However when I open it in Word 2008 Print Layout View, parts of some of the pages cannot be seen on screen. Page 1 shows about 6 cm of the table and the rest is invisible - yet it prints OK and is OK in draft mode. The same problem exists in Publishing Layout View.

I prefer to work in Print Layout View and would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks for the reply Clive.
To add a little more spice to the mystery, in Print Layout View pages 1,2,5 and 6 have parts of the page invisible while pages 3,4,7,8 and 9 display correctly.
When I switch to Draft mode, the offending pages have a thin, light blue line across the first column on the table where the page break should be. The pages which view correctly have a thin dotted line.
I must add, the whole document is a continuous table because I prefer to add information as I gather/research it and then break it up prior to printing.

Microsoft adopted Apple's ATSUI interface with Word 2004, which has
continued in Word 2008. The display occupies a little more space than in
Word X.

I suspect your first option is to make the tables a little narrower.

You could try inserting a new row in a few places then choosing Table menu
=> Convert => Convert table to text. This may allow some breathing space.
However, I suspect there may be some corruption in the tables that is
showing up in 2008.

I don't have Word 2008, so can't try to replicate anything. Stick around;
one of the other regulars here will chime in soon with some bright ideas!

After discussing this with an expert colleague, I'm inclined to confirm my
earlier suspicion that there *is* corruption in your tables.

To get over it, you could (in Word 2008) Select All then choose Table menu
=> Convert => Convert table to text, then copy the text into a new blank
document, Select All then choose Table menu => Convert => Convert text to
table and specify the same number of columns.

I would still recommend having a blank paragraph mark or two in the sequence
so you don't have a cell bigger than one page. Tables in Word are
uncomfortable with that.

For new tables, I'd recommend setting them up from scratch (actually, you
will only need to do so once if you use Word's AutoText feature to drop in
tables formatted exactly as you like them). I've written about this, and I
also have some views on the shortcomings of some of Word's default settings
in tables and ways to avoid the trouble that ensues. If that interests you,
take a look respectively at pages 124-125 and 65 of some notes on the way I
use Word for the Mac, titled "Bend Word to Your Will", which are available
as a free download from the Word MVPs' website
(http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html).

[Note: "Bend Word to your will" is designed to be used electronically and
most subjects are self-contained dictionary-style entries. If you decide to
read more widely than the item I've referred to, it's important to read the
front end of the document -- especially pages 3 and 5 -- so you can select
some Word settings that will allow you to use the document effectively.]

But wait a day or two before converting your tables, just in case someone
comes along and contradicts me... ;-)

Cheers,

Clarification:

By this:

> uncomfortable with that.

I meant in a temporary position initially. The paragraph marks can easily be
deleted from the left margin when the eventual pagination is established.

I'm working in Word 11.2.0 on a Mac (10.4.11) and am having a problem
with the pagination function. I am working on a large document: a script
that in its current, unedited version runs about 45,000 words, maybe 250
pages, and takes up 38KB. The automatic pagination register at the lower
left of my screen shows a continuous count up into the thousands of pages,
with no end in sight, and when I try to print or go to word count, I get the
multicolored rolling wheel. The wheel also appears if I leave this Word
document open for any extended length of time. Can you tell me what's
going on?
Many thanks,

Andy

Hi Andy -

What you describe are classic symptoms of document corruption. For
recommended fixes see the information on the following page:

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DocumentCorruption.html

BTW - For future reference it's better to not post a new issue in an expired
topic. Not only does the last activity date back to February but the topic
deals with a completely different problem and a separate & distinct version
of Word.

Also: Have you neglected to update Office for a specific reason? Current
version of Office 2004 (11) is 11.3.9, so you're way behind according to
your message. It would be wise to get Office up-to-date & run Repair Disk
Permissions before doing anything else. (I'd suggest you let AutoUpdate do
its thing to get the updates applied.)
