I am looking to boost up my internal hard drive. I have an iMac DV+ 450
mh. slot loading with a 20 gig hard drive. I would like to replace the
internal hard drive, but I am confused about the specs. for the new one.
I don't want to purchase something that will not fit. I am looking for a
40 gig + drive.

There are a lot of dives out there, and I don't know which type to buy.
Any help would be appreciated.

Bob

....and she had to walk into mine! :) Well, I have a suggestion; skip the
headaches and just buy an external firewire drive. 160 gig is cheap.
Think how easy this will make your life when you get a new computer. m.

An excellent suggestion! Especially now that newer computers have
switched from ATA to SATA.

You can replace the internal drive with any ATA drive that's 128G
(137G the way drive makers measure drives) or smaller. Larger than
128G will also work, but you won't be able to use more than the first
128G of it.

The slot-loading iMac DV has an Ultra ATA/66 bus. Just about any
drive bought today should conform to that spec. They may be faster
(UATA/100 or UATA/133), but they should run as UATA/66 drives when
attached to a UATA/66 bus.

As for physically fitting, as far as I know, all modern desktop
drives are in the standard 1" tall, 3.5" form factor. A taller
(1.5") drive won't fit, but I've only seen that size in old drives.

Actually doing the work to replace the internal drive isn't hard, but
it involves removing several components in order to get the drive bays
out of the case. Doing it all just right can be tricky. If you
haven't done this kind of work in an iMac before, you may want to
leave this to a service tech.

Or follow the other advice that's been posted and use an external
FireWire drive. Then you can get any size drive you want. Just plug
and play. And you can easily move it to your next computer.

Considering all the reports of FireWire drives getting hosed with
Panther, are you sure this suggestion will actually skip the headaches?
