You can replace the internal drive with any ATA drive that's 128G
(137G the way drive makers measure drives) or smaller. Larger than
128G will also work, but you won't be able to use more than the first
128G of it.
The slot-loading iMac DV has an Ultra ATA/66 bus. Just about any
drive bought today should conform to that spec. They may be faster
(UATA/100 or UATA/133), but they should run as UATA/66 drives when
attached to a UATA/66 bus.
As for physically fitting, as far as I know, all modern desktop
drives are in the standard 1" tall, 3.5" form factor. A taller
(1.5") drive won't fit, but I've only seen that size in old drives.
Actually doing the work to replace the internal drive isn't hard, but
it involves removing several components in order to get the drive bays
out of the case. Doing it all just right can be tricky. If you
haven't done this kind of work in an iMac before, you may want to
leave this to a service tech.
Or follow the other advice that's been posted and use an external
FireWire drive. Then you can get any size drive you want. Just plug
and play. And you can easily move it to your next computer.
