Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>games>strategic (more info?)

I'm looking for an old, mid 90's game on the Macintosh. Only problem,
I don't remember the name of it...although I don't think it's any of
the "Orion" series.
What I remember about it-
It's a turn based space strategy game.
You start on one planet with a basic level of technology. You build
ships on that planet with that level of tech. You send them out to
the other planets. The ships speed and firepower is a function of
it's level. As you take over planets you can use them to make more
ships. When you capture a planet it gets the tech level of the the
ships that invaded. You can send ships from higher level tech planets
to raise the level of lower level planets.

OK...that isn't a lot to go on, but I'm just casting out the biggest
net I can in hopes of getting some help finding the demo version that
I had (it would let you play up to the 100th turn)

Anyone got any vague ideas from my vague memories??

Sounds a lot like Galactic Frontiers. It's like the standard space
strategy game stripped down to its absolute essence. You have a little
star field in a window, then another window that lets you make adjustments
to planets. Planetary production is ships, then you can spend ships to
improve the various numbers on each planet, like radar, defense, etc.

It was a fun little game, nice to play quickies, although a little
simplistic. There are screenshots here, you can see if they ring a bell:

For a modern version of this you may try Pax Galaxia. It's realtime and
therefore faster paced but has the same kind of delightful simplicity.

I think I know the game you mean, though I can't remember the name
off-hand (don't think it was G:AD). Did it involve a choice of races
(some produced quickly, some had good firepower, etc)?

The game I was thinking about was "Galactic Frontiers". Not as complex
as some as the alternatives in this field, but it looks good and is
immediately understandable and playable.

Having looked at it again, it doesn't necessarily match your
description, as ships are all equal, but you can sacrifice ships to
raise various attributes of planets.
