Hi everyone,

I need some advice from all of you. I'm a Multimedia Student and my
Final year project will be 3D Animation. My questions are:

1. Is it a good Idea to buy apple iBOOK G4 1.33GHz? (My second choice
is Acer Centrino 1.7 GHz)
2. How fast it runs compare to Other Processor (Intel, AMD and so on)?
1.33 GHz equiv. to????

Benchmarks are not always the best solution, unless you can find one that
specifically tests for your needs. That said, if I recall correctly, a 1.33
G4 should be roughly equivalent to a 2.6GHz Pentium type processor. You'd
probably get better performance from the iBook. Another factor will be RAM,
so get as much as you can afford. Also, the new iBooks come with an Airport
wireless card preinstalled so that won't be an extra expense. Have you
determined what options you have for 3D animations applications?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

My friends told me that Centrino 1.5GHz beats Apple G4 1.25GHz or probably 1.33GHz. Is it true......????? Well, I'm going to make a 3D movie for my last semester project. Maybe I will use Maya software . Can anyone give me some opinion what type of computer should I use? wheather I should buy Windows based system or Apple System.... For those who have used Apple system for long time please give me some opinion.

Again, benchmarks are hard to come by for very specific, narrow uses.
However, PC chips and Apple chips use different instruction sets for
processor operations. Apple instructions sets are reduced, while PC sets are
complex. In short, it takes fewer instructions to do the same operation on
an Apple. So...a 1.25GHz G4 more than likely will do the same task quicker
than a 1.5GHz Centrino, simply because it is the more efficient processor.
That's why historically Intel and the others have focused on faster and
faster processors, although Intel has backed away from that now, focusing
instead on bus speeds and the like.

Bottom line? I believe the Apple G4 will perform better and faster than the
Centrino. My opinion, although somewhat informed.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Cross platform comparisons are always difficult... you can get tests
that 'prove' that a particular Apple model is faster than a particular
Wintel model-- and vice versa.

And does it matter? If the conclusion is (let us say) that a particular
Centrino laptop finishes a suite of Photoshop tests 23 seconds than a
particular Mac model (or vice versa) should you buy a computer on that
basis?

Or do you add into the equation other, less easily benchmarked
measures-- like the time you save with the Mac not having to combat
viruses or spyware, or the time saved because the Mac interface is
better designed and so has fewer wasted clicks and confusing dialogue
boxes?

There's no single right-answer for all users... for some anticipated
computer use, maybe a Windows laptop is the best choice. For others, its
a poorer choice than market share would indicate.

In general, for graphics, video, or multimedia work, the Mac is a better
platform-- regardless of random benchmark testing results.
