Hello!
I'm new to this group. If this question has been asked many times
before, please bear with me.

A friend has a G4 ibook with a faulty screen. The display is not faulty
itself rather it will only display at certain angles. Move it too far
and the screen goes blank. Obviously there is some problem with the
connection between the screen and the deck.

The Apple store has quoted $500 for a new screen with a minimum charge
of $100 if you have it checked but take no action.

Is there a way of re-wiring the screen to the deck without replacing the
working screen?

The machine in question is about 3 years old and out of guarantee.

Thanks for your patience.

classic problem with ibooks, although not usually on the g4 ones.

yes, and it is not easy to do. you need to not only take apart the
bottom half, but the top half too. however, the cable is only $30 or
so. you *might* be able to patch the cable break at the hinge, for an
uglier but easier to do fix. it is also possible that the problem is
not the cable at all, but yours sounds like it probably is.

if it is 3 years old, it isn't a g4 ibook.

check:

<http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/>

if your machine qualifies, it will get fixed for free. do it soon,
because it ends march 18 or three years from original purchase. you
said the ibook is three years old, so you may have only two more weeks
left...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Hi,
I had a similar problem, when opening my iBook (G4) the screen was
almost pink. Try to unlock the four allen screw on your display part (on
the side). Since I did it I never had problems.

This is well-known problem. It is a specific cable that needs to be
replaced. The cable is just about 10 bucks but it rquires taking apart
almost the entire iBook - nothing I'd be too keen on doing.

You might send it in to an authoirsed Apple dealer that does repairs like
tihs. As far as I remember, www.smalldog.com offers such a repair for
something like 79 dollars. Perhaps you'd like to check out their website.
I recall to have seen this repair as a standard repair there (if you are
in the US).

Hope this helps.
