9.1? According to MacTracker, that would be the last iMac/G3 model
(Summer 2001 edition - 500, 600 or 700MHz G3, discontinued March
2003). At least that's the last model to come bundled with 9.1.
Subsequent 9-compatible iMacs came bundled with 9.2.2. Although they
might be able to boot 9.1, I wouldn't count on it. Macs typically
can't boot systems older than what they shipped with.

Also, it's worth noting in many cases that Macs that come with a certain
system version require extra enablers to work properly (the retail disc
often won't work with it, even if it's labelled as the same version). So
even if these Macs came with 9.1, it's possible that the retail 9.1 disc
won't work with it.

I thought system enablers were only used for Systems 7.x.x.
I know my Quadra (which requires the 040 enabler for 7.1 through
7.6.1) doesn't need it for 8.1.

Yeah, those enablers are from 7.x. But I'm 99% sure there's other
"enablers" that exist in later OS's.
There are still other minor differences in system versions. I'm sorry
because I don't have any specific examples, but as I recall, some
machines that came with OS 8.1 won't take a retail 8.1 disk. The same
goes for 8.5/8.6, if I remember correctly. I'll try to find some
specific examples if I can...

Hi David,
Thank you for your prompt response. It is much appreciated.

Interesting. I've heard of the opposite being true - that the
installers that come bundled with hardware often won't work properly
on other model Macs. I've never heard of a retail version that
wouldn't install on compatible hardware.
Unless you're thinking about point releases that fix bugs needed for
specific hardware platforms. For instance, systems that shipped with
8.5.1 may have a problem installing 8.5.0. But that's not the same
thing.

I'm going to disagree. Enablers went away when Jobs came back, IIRC.
Noble idea, but more trouble than they were worth in practice.

I don't know, now... ;-) I must be thinking of bundled installers not
working on other Macs. I'd like to see someone try using a retail 8.0
disc in a Beige G3 though.
Sorry for the confusion!

An example would be the iMac. They first shipped with OS 8.1 after it
was released. The retail 8.1 has no support for USB at all, and so can
not be used to install or boot the first iMacs or any later one. The
8.1 installed on the iMac also featured Remote Access for the first
time to handle dial-up and other connections. That replaced OT/PPP in
8.5 for the rest of the PowerMacs. The same thing happened after 8.6
came out, the first G4's shipped with a special version of 8.6.
