Anybody here have a fixed view on the utility of iPhoto Buddy?
I have many thousand photos of family and such. But then I really like
being able to use commercial phot packages as an adjunct to media
browser within iPages, iWeb, etc. Logically I would have to move
15,000 commercial photos into iPhoto and have them muck up the
organization of my family photos.
Seems that iPhoto Buddy might be the aid I'm looking for, but juggling
entire libraries which when corrupted can be a nightmare putting back
together again (I know--I've done it) makes me a bit nervous.

Holding down the option key when starting iPhoto gives you the same
functionality as iPhotoBuddy.

And what functionality is it that the option key provides?

The ability to have multiple libraries of photos. When I looked at
iPhoto Buddy a couple months ago, it made claims of encryption and
security blah blah. All it takes is dropping into a shell and you
can access everything iPhoto Buddy says it's "secured" for you.

Okay, just trying to whittle out some meaning. If I start-up with
option it will put me into a shell. I could find no docu in iPhoto's
help facility regarding this. Perhaps iPhono Buddiy is a gui to
something that doesn't actually have docue to control it?

In fact I've just tried holding down the Option key when starting iPhoto
4, and it presents me with the above choices, though I suspect worded
slightly differently:
"Your Photo Library was not found. Do you want to find your Photo
Library?" The choices presented are:
Quit, Create Library or Find Library.

If you start up iPhoto with the Option key down, iPhoto does not use its
existing iPhoto Library. Instead it puts up a notice with a choice of
Quit, Create Library (to make a brand new library of photos), or Choose
Library. If you Choose Library, it just brings up a file browser, so you
can locate any previous iPhoto Libraries you have created. Pretty easy
to have multiple libraries, once you are used to it. I think that method
has existed since iPhoto 5. The same option key trick works on some
other iLife and other applications.
The option key on startup is documented in iPhoto Help under "Switching
between photo libraries".
iPhoto Buddy does much the same, but supported it in iPhoto 2 and 4. It
puts a pleasant and easy to use GUI front end over the various libraries.
If you want more, you could also try Brian Webster's iPhoto Library
Manager, which is similar. This shareware adds features like extracting
photos from one library to another or merging to libraries while
preserving much of the photo library metadata and roll organisation.

Thanks for the details. I was reluctant to do an option-startup for
fear it would present possibilities that could be tragic.
